The Government is committed to reducing red tape, lowering the cost of doing business
and enhancing productivity. That's why we're cutting the cost of regulation
to the economy by $1 billion a year. The media and telecommunications industries
are some of the most heavily regulated sectors in Australia.
As part of the first Repeal Day, the Minister for Communications has removed over 1,000
pages of unnecessary red tape in the communications portfolio.
In fact, a significant proportion of the Government's deregulatory Bill for repeal day one falls
within the Communications portfolio. So far, the Government's measures have saved
an expected $35 million for the media and telecomms industries.
Importantly, we're keeping consumer safeguards in place.
This means business can get on with creating jobs and the Australian public can rest assured
that their rights are protected. Deregulation: it's about a stronger, more
prosperous Australia.
