Hey guys, Adam Shaw here from Bravura Media Company. Today we have a vintage map of the
Outer Banks that was produced in 1862. I picked this map because I vacation in the Outer Banks
all the time. My dad has a beach house in Duck North Carolina and I love the fact that
we have an ocean on one side and a mile across the barrier island we have a sound on the
other. It means that we get a sunrise on the ocean and a sunset on the sound side on the
bay water which is very very pretty. So, definitely if you haven't been there, go take a vacation
there, it's worth it. Anyways lets look at this map and see the different details that
we can see in this map. If we look in the northern part of the Outer Banks we can obviously
see Kill Devil Hills labeled right there with the different sand dunes right here the different
circles right here. This is right, very close to where the Wright Brothers flew their first
flight, right there. You have Nags Head to the south. Roanoke Island which is also known
as Manteo today. If we go even further south we can see the Oregon Inlet which is a little
water canal between the barrier islands. If we go even more south, we can see Cape Hatteras
a very very popular tourist destination in the Outer Banks. There is a lighthouse down
here, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and you can also see another inlet down over at this
side. I believe this dotted line is a shipping line, where ships came into deliver goods.
And here is Croatan Sound, Croatan as you might not know is a word, an Indian word that
was carved into a tree after the Lost Colony went missing, it's the first colony to settle
in America and after they went missing this word croatan, an Indian word was carved into
a tree so, that's Croatan Sound, just for a little history into the Outer Banks. And
as you can see this is the ocean side of the Outer Banks, this is the bay. So not that
much difference between, you can pretty much walk across in like five minutes, I've done
it. You know some of these areas are really narrow, like over here. So, I really, I really
like this map because I as a kid, my dad drove all the way down to Cape Hatteras and I can
remember seeing, you know an ocean on one side and a bay on the other and just amazing
views. But, lets move it forward, we offer this map in digital and physical print form.
