>> Burress: Now we have to drop it in and determine, we're gonna put a bottom plate
in there that this will rest on, that will cover the lug holes and we'll cut a hole in
the center of that plate and weld our piping on. The rest of it will be screw pipe with
out piece coming out that will attach to whatever your air source is gonna be. And then we'll
put our other cross bar in so that pipe can rest on top of that.
We're gonna use this piece of plate that we cut out for our hole as the base of this thing.
Alright, that is actually our tuyere. That's where the air is gonna enter the bottom of
the fire pot to supply the blast for keeping the coal going.
Let's flip it back over. Now we're gonna screw this onto those threads under there, and end
up with the opening facing back to me. Well, let's go ahead and put the rest of it together
first.
These are all just standard two inch screw pipe parts that you can pick up in a plumbing
supply store, nothing special about them.
>> Campbell: Black pipe?
>> Burress: Yeah, black iron pipe. You don't ever want to use galvanized on anything that's
gonna have fire attached to it. Galvanized puts off some really noxious fumes when it's
heated up, a lot of zinc and stuff that's really bad for you to breath.
So, just a couple more things we need to do to call this thing finished. We need to cut
a piece of plate with some slots in it to go down over this, to keep your coal from
falling down in, and also to break up the air coming through. And we need to make us
a tong rack to go on one side, soyou've got a place to hang your tools.
Don't reach it all the way at the top this time, its gonna be hot up there.
That ought to hold the tongs up.
Now we need to, actually I've got one already cut here. That breaks the airupand keeps the
coal from falling down into the tuyere pipe. These are serviceable forges, one of my student
forges in the shop here is a brake drum forge. We've used it for nine years now and I haven't
replaced the drum in it yet. I use on of these for my portable setup so, it's an inexpensive
way to get one of the most essential pieces of equipment for your shop. And if you go
to buy a commercial fire pot, it can be quite expensive. I mean four or five hundred dollars
just for the fire pot itself, not to mention the table and everything that goes with it.
In the future, we'll do a video on how to build a side draft hood to go with this, which
is a real effective tool fortaking the smoke out of your shop. But anyway, hope you've
enjoyed this, hope you've learned something. Like I say, use your imagination, sky's the
limit. Just get out there and build what you need.
