Hi, I'm Sue Maher, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the
University of Minnesota, Duluth.
And I'm Olaf Kuhlke, Associate Dean of CLA.
Our college is home to 2100 students who are majoring in
the humanities, social sciences, and languages.
Spring is arriving in Duluth, and we're all enjoying the
splendid weather and our great parks and
trails near Lake Superior.
In CLA, our students and faculty are preparing for
summer study abroad programs, internships, and field work in
anthropology and sustainable development.
It's also the time of year for making college decisions.
So we wanted to tell you about some new and innovative
programs in the College of Liberal Arts.
CLA has two new majors this fall--
French studies and Geographic Information Science, or GIS.
We're here in the GIS lab where you can learn how to use
computers and software to make maps, analyze satellite
images, and work with geospatial data.
GIS a rapidly growing field of jobs in the private sector,
nonprofit organizations, and various branches of
government.
The French Studies major develops French language
skills and an understanding of French speaking cultures
around the world.
French is also an official language of many international
organizations such as the United Nations, NATO, the
European Union, and the World Trade Organization.
Our former Environmental Studies major has evolved into
a new major, Environment and Sustainability.
With a focus on sustainable development and lots of
opportunities for community based undergraduate research.
As a CLA student you will gain a global perspective and the
technology skills you need to thrive in
today's world and workplace.
As you make your college decision, if you want more
information about these majors and our many other academic
programs, please call or email our office and we'll put you
in touch with a faculty member or advisor.
Good luck with your college decision.
I hope to see you at UMD this fall.
