Hi, I’m Holly from NIU’s social media team. This week’s theme for Ask Away Wednesday
is welcome days, so we talked to Lindsey Myers from Housing and Dining for what you can expect.
Opening days and Welcome days at NIU start on Thursday, August 23rd. Our move-in happens
from 9am-2pm but you will be getting a packet in the mail from Housing and Dining. It will
have your move-in traffic flow maps, it’ll have your color-coated hang tags for your
Residence Hall and it’ll also have some suggested move-in times for your Residence
Hall and the floor that you’re living on. We’ll have lots of volunteers here to help
with us so that’s always a great process. As far as parking for opening day, whenever
you get your move-in packet from Housing and Dining, the color coated hang tags are certainly
going to help you as far as parking here on campus. When you first arrive on campus, the
NIU police are going to help direct you to your student’s residence hall and from there
they’re also going to direct you to parking for the day. For students’ first week on
campus, we’ve got some great activities that they can look forward to. The Welcome
Days events start on Thursday afternoon with a taste of Northern. The taste of Northern
just gives you a good opportunity to get to know some of the different restaurants we
have around town and to sample some of their food. Following the taste of Northern, we’ll
have something called the Northern Lights ceremony. This is a great tradition ceremony
that we started for our students to really kind of drive home the importance of being
a Huskie and all of the great things NIU has to offer all of our Huskies here on campus.
Friday morning, we’re going to start out with something called a band run. The NIU
marching band is going to march across campus past all of our residence halls. Students
will fall in behind the band and we’re going to march over to the convocation center for
the start of academic convocation. After that, we have an all campus picnic that everyone’s
invited to, and after the picnic, we’re going to head into Huskie Stadium for the
“We Are Huskies” event. So that’ll be a great way to learn the fight song, learn
all the NIU cheers, and get you ready for some of the football games this upcoming fall.
On Saturday we have a brand new event called “Rock the Mic Huskie Talent Jam,” it’s
an open mic night featuring a group called “Stir Friday Night.” Also there is an
involvement fair right after that to let you know some of the things that you can get involved
with on campus, clubs and organizations you might be interested in. For more information
about Welcome days, we certainly encourage you to go to the website, www.niu.edu/studentinvolvement/welcomedays.
Thanks for tuning in and don’t forget to ask away on our Facebook page!
