This is "I Love Bike Pride" the show which follows the conquests of bicycle-world,
talks through the voice of the activists on two wheels
and discovers the ferments which enliven the urban underworld of bicycle
in our car-crowded town
We have many guests
In studio with me there are volunteers from Greenpeace Turin local group
This is Gabriele
and this is Fabrizio aka "Fruggioi"
For the ones who don't know Greenpeace is an environmental association
which deals with global issues concerning me, you
a Canadian, an Australian, an Asian...
just everyone
What do you do for Greenpeace in your free time?
We take part... in radio shows, for example
That's just the answer I would give too
Every year we participate in Turin's Book Fair
carrying on an awareness campaign
This year we urged publishing houses to increase the use of recycled paper for their productions
besides encouraging the use of sustainable paper, anyway recycled one is even better
For us it's an important event, it has quite a national significance
as it's useful for filing our sustainability ranking for Italian publishing houses
as it's useful for filing our sustainability ranking for Italian publishing houses
Greenpeace rankings are always a good "compass" for consumers
You issued rankings about electronics, canned tuna...
aiming at influencing consumers' behaviour
We don't tell you only what is the problem, we do give you solutions for your shopping
including your book searching
♫ I've never seen... a vegan lion
But why have I invited these GP people here...?
They probably use to go about by tanker
moving from tanker to tanker, traveling by parachute or hang-glider...
Actually, as you mentioned before, Gabriele...
Referring to Bike Pride?
Yes, I saw some odd characters there cycling around by rickshaw
with Greeanpeace flags...
Exactly, we've been participating for 4 years
And Bike Pride is 4 years old, so that's super
We were present, and we'll be present
Last year we had the idea of renting a rickshaw
Hopefully someday we'll ride it through via San Donato or via Roma
if they will ever be turned into pedestrian areas as proposed
Let's hope so, especially via Roma
Right, as I'm sure - ecologically thinking and speaking -
that you aim at a "pedestrianisation" of the world
Going on foot, choosing bicycle or public transportation
are among the simplest, most effective and useful actions that individuals can do...
Sure, right... wait. Giovanni, how did you get here?
By tram
Excellent
Moving by bike, thus not polluting, is an action tightly bound
to climate change trends, polar ice melting issue, that is a global problem
By the way, we've been carrying on a campaign for a couple of years
one of Greenpeace's most important: Save the Arctic
Keep it in mind because every time you choose bicycle
you're someway saving a bit of your Arctic
I wanted to mention this campaign
as by the way it's related to mobility, Bike Pride, bicycles, pollution...
Using bicycles or other sustainable means of transport
keeps you from increasing the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
which contribute to climate change
Moreover, if you avoid oil, oil plants will be no longer needed
We all remember the big accident happened in the Gulf of Mexico few years ago, the "black tide"...
Having such an oil plant working in the Arctic would be extremely risky
because there you have very little time to drill oil
and in case of accident you should act promptly to contain the leak
and limit the damage before everything ices over
If you don't, then you have to wait for ice to melt again
Therefore oil drilling in the Arctic would be absolutely dangerous
So choosing bicycle means not polluting, not contributing in climate change...
In the end, one can easily realize how every personal, "local" behaviour
does affect the global trends
We got a question from a listener: as we know, Greenpeace deals with global campaigns
Has it ever come to a synergy with some other territorial environmental association in Turin?
As said before, Greenpeace carries on international campaigns
while local organizations here in Piedmont
- rightly - care more about local problems
Therefore it's difficult to interact, to communicate...
When we had last referendum about nuclear energy
and a collective of associations was born
we participated as we could and it worked fine
As far as possible, we have always contributed
Unfortunately it's not that easy because we deal with different issues
Besides oil, another problem as for climate change is coal
We took part in demonstrations in La Spezia, for example
As there's a coal-burning power plant there
Together with a citizens' local committee and other individuals who cared
So when we can, we absolutely collaborate
Who has ever committed in volunteering and activism
can understand how difficult is to set up an association
both being widespread in the local territory and keeping a global viewpoint
Just few words about Detox
our ongoing campaign against pollution
Today's news: a quite important company, Burberry
pushed by Greenpeace it committed to stop polluting in its production areas
- So they are going to pollute somewhere else... - No, no...
Clothing industry pollutes in production stages as well as in the distribution phase
As when items get here we wash them, we wear them
Toxic substances pass through our pores and contaminate our organisms...
So this pollution gradually spreads around...
Before Burberry we have already convinced H&M, we'll put pressure on Adidas and Disney
We convinced Zara, Valentino...
Bye everyone, say hello you too, and we all will be happy
