My name is Phil. My father Bob was a patient at Kindred in the Spring of 2013. He fractured
his leg right below his hip and had to have a steel rod put in it. He was in pretty bad
shape and almost passed away.
When they actually got him healthy enough to get out of the hospital, we contacted the
people of Kindred to see if they would take him as a patient. It was a perfect place for
a transition for him from the hospital like situation into rehab care.
He came here. He was on some oxygen. He was maximum assist to stand from the edge of the
bed, moderate assistance to get up so he needed some decent help to even get from laying down
to sitting at the edge of the bed and a lot of help to stand.
You know I could have just given up and never tried to walk, but that’s not me.
He was always kind of willing to work and eventually through working with him he was
going up and down our small staircase in the gym. He was walking over 100 feet in the hallways
with assistance and with a walker. The walker helped him to keep that weight off his feet.
But he did very well and eventually got to the point that he was stable enough to move
onto the next level. He just needed some more conditioning but could do that within the
comfort of his own home and the good part about somewhere like this is as someone has
their time here with us we can really push them through to that area.
The home care – between physical therapy, occupational therapy and nursing, it’s really
more of a transition from the rehab that he was already getting prior to coming home.
A lot of our goals were really geared towards achieving safety in such a way that his goal
of being able to live independently that he can achieve that.
Being back on my own, by myself, I feel very good.
Well it’s perfect for us because he doesn’t like to live with people and he certainly
couldn’t live on his own in the state that he was in so now the fact that we’ve actually
got him to the point that he can walk, drive, shop, go to restaurants on his own, that means
he can live a happier more fulfilling life.
