Do you feel like giving up? Do you feel like you want to quit? Sometimes I have people
tell me that they just want to give it all up. They want to stop their business, they
can't do it anymore. And I want to talk to you about the questions you should ask yourself
before you actually give up. Most small businesses fail because the owner is trying to do everything,
okay? We cannot do everything, we aren't good at everything and the number one reason businesses
don't succeed is because what the owner is doing is not sustainable. So I want you to
think about something before you actually give it all up and throw in the towel, okay?
I want you to think about if you were a chef or a caterer and you said you wanted to run
a business, and you wanted to run a restaurant. Would you be in the back of the kitchen and
then run out when a customer comes through the front door and be the hostess and sit
them down at the table and then take their order like the waitress, then go back in the
kitchen and make that? And oh they ordered a Bloody Mary from scratch or a margarita
and so you ran over to the bar and became the bartender and then you served them their
food like the server and then you cleaned them up as a busboy. You would never do that.
You would think the restaurant owner would be insane. His specialty is cooking and being
a chef and creating dishes. That's where his passion is, that's where his strength is.
Most of us lose our passion and our excitement and our energy for doing what we do because
we're trying to do it all. You can't do it all. There's no way you can. So this week
I want you to breathe. I want you to talk to yourself for a second. No one's going to
listen to this answer but you. What are the things that you're really good at? What are
the things that you should be focusing on that started your business? What product or
service are you so passionate about that you started this business and this is what you're
doing it? That's what you should be focused on. You can actually buy time. I know we don't
have a lot of money but there are people who are better at certain things than you. They're
subject matter experts or there are people, like think of the example of the waiter and
the bartender and the busboy. Think about that example as your example for not possibly
being able to do it all well. You don't have enough time in the day and you're exhausted
and you're pulling your hair out. And that's okay. But before you give up and before you
quite something that you're this passionate about and you put all this time and energy
into, I want you to just really look at your heart and your mind. Be strategic, be proactive
about your choices. Be honest with yourself and say, 'I cannot do it all but I can control
what I do do,' and that will make you feel so much better about how you're spending your
time and energy. That's your Backpocket Strategy for the week. Make it a great week. Hop on
over to my Facebook page and let me know what you think.
