So, we are living in an incredible exciting time because with developing of new technologies
to test the molecular and genetic makeup of tumors has advanced and overrode and overwhelmed
us with a lot of new information. We are in the middle of putting all the different puzzles
together to understand what makes colon cancer develop, what makes colon cancer progress,
and how to select patients for the most important and effective treatment. We are in the middle
of a personalized oncology. Over the last 12 month, we have gained a lot of new information
how to test the patients for molecular genetic alterations to allow the selection of very
highly effective treatments, so that is extremely exciting and important to have access to this
new information developing. Most of you probably heard about a foundation medicine which does
the whole genome testing with over 260 different mutations. Now, we are still struggling what
all this information mean, but it shows and points into the future what is going to happen
in our clinics that we will gain more and more understanding and hopefully also additional
treatment options to really select out treatments which benefit individual patients the most,
but on the other hand, we have also witnessed developing of new drugs which increase the
outcome of our colon cancer patients really dramatically. With development of drugs, particular
against colon cancer stem cells targeting the most important pathways in the development
of colon cancer, there will be a new way we look and treat colon cancer in the future.
They are very promising because they actually target the underlying resistance pathways
which are including colon cancer steps in the way that we can overcome this biggest
challenge in our clinical practices.
