Yahoo! has said recently it’s focusing its efforts on the mobile space, and it’s not
wasting any time. On Thursday the company launched new weather and email apps for mobile
devices.
According to TechCrunch, the apps’ design has a clean, visually and engaging user experience.
The app has a full-screen photo display, with images provided by Yahoo!’s Flickr photo-sharing
service.
Wired explored the weather app and says “The current temperature is shown in the lower
left corner of the main app interface, and more detailed information like hourly conditions,
humidity, and a precipitation map can be accessed with a swipe upwards." (Via iPhone Hacks)
“The new Yahoo! mail app helps us sift through it all. Tap a message and see all from that
sender and manage emails with a single swipe. Add to favorites, create folders or delete.” (Via GigaOM)
We all remember Yahoo!’s push away from working at home. CNN Money reports that Yahoo!
CEO Marissa Mayer says the in-office collaboration, as a result of that decision, lead to the
new apps.
“As an example of that collaboration, Mayer touted the newly-launched Yahoo Weather app
for iOS...an idea, she explained, originated by two software engineers who work in the
same office.”
PCWorld suggests the change of in-house policy under Mayer’s direction are helping bring
the Silicon Valley company up to date and more relevant among users.
“Yahoo sees itself as being in the ‘second sprint’ of its rebuilding efforts to win
back users and increase its revenue.”
Only time — and ratings — will tell if the apps give Yahoo! a push up the charts.
