HI. I want to talk to you about some Old World monkeys called the Patas monkeys. These are
actually the fastest primates. They can run about 35 kilometers per hour. They are Old
World monkeys and you can definitely tell that by just looking at their nostrils. They
do point downwards, not outwards like New World monkeys. Notice that when you zoom in
on them they have long tails. New World monkeys also have long tails but the Old World monkeys
do not have that fifth limb prehensile tail. So you always know an Old World versus a New
World if they are swinging from their tail as well. These monkeys are also known to be
called dancing monkeys because when they walk they walk on their fingertips, not on the
palm of their hands. They are indigenous to the African savannahs and are actually prey
to predatory animals like lions and other mammals. So, these are a great little species
of monkey. Very, very fast and a lot of fun to observe at the zoo.
