Congenital heart disease is relatively uncommon in the general population. It affects about
8 out of every 1000 children with serious heart disease in about 4 out of every 1000.
Serious heart disease is defined as those who require either a surgery or a hospitalization
to institute medications to control their condition in the first year of life.
The heart is completely formed in the womb by seven to eight weeks of gestation. The

of these defects whereas once the child is born and the transition to a normal circulation
occurs, the defects are no longer well tolerated, and it places to child in jeopardy.
