It's one of the greatest operas of all time: Don Carlo by the Italian genius, Giuseppe
Verdi.
To commemorate the bicentenary year of Verdi's birth, the Korea National Opera presents the
intriguing tale of Don Carlo.
The revival is directed by the globally-acclaimed Australian opera director, Elijah Moshinsky.
Moshinsky is renowned for focusing on the dramatic qualities of opera classics, including
those by Verdi.
In all, some 200 people are involved in this production.
Set in 16th century Spain, Don Carlo tells the true saga of King Philip II and his son,
filled with major conflicts caused by jealousy and suspicion.
In the title role is a noted name
in Italy: tenor Na Seung-seo.
Na is joined on stage by another celebrated name, bass Philip Kang playing King Philip.
Kang was the first Asian to formally join the world-famous Berlin Opera.
From taking Carlo's lover as his own wife... to arresting him for treason...
King Philip took extreme measures.
Kang has a commanding presence throughout the show in his role as King Philip.
In recreating this human drama of epic proportions, traditional costumes from the era were also
adopted.
Musically and dramatically compelling... some critics hail Don Carlo as the best of Verdi.
The proof is in the latest production by the Korea National Opera.
