This is how to make thick ruffles using ribbon yarn and single crochets.
Start out by
taking your ribbon yarn and winding it smoothly and flatly
so you'll be able to work with it.
You may have to trim off the end
to get the end smooth.
You notice the ribbon
has loops on top.
To begin we will be doubling it over to work through the loops.
I'll be starting on the front so I'll double it over to the back.
When you finish, do the same thing.
For this particular project I've started with single crochets.
I've worked two rows of single crochets.
I'm chaining one and turning.
Often you'll skip that first stitch,
but not in this pattern. We will be working through that first stitch.
I'm going to put it my ribbon
in front of my single crochet base.
I'm going to go through. Now these first few stitches
will be double loops because
we folded them over in the beginning.
Go through the loop or ladder on the ribbon and under
the top two loops of the single crochet.
Yarn over, pull through and
yarn over and pull through the two loops on the hook, making a single crochet.
Of course, the loops on the ribbon are much wider than the single crochet stitches.
----
I'm using a G hook. You'll have to go through the next ribbon loop or ladder
and come back to your next single crochet.
Insert hook under top two loops of the next single crochet. Yarn over and pull through.
Yarn over and pull through making a single crochet.
Now I only have the single ribbon loops or ladders to work through.
Go through the next ribbon loop or ladder and under the top two loops of the next single crochet.
Hold both together. Yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through making a single crochet.
I'm working a few more through the front.
Go through the next ribbon loop or ladder.
Go through the next two top loops of the next single crochet.
Yarn over and pull through them both.
Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook making a single crochet.
After you're finished with a row, very gently pull the ruffles down.
Getting the mesh loops even.
I'm not going to finish the row.
But to finish the row, chain one and turn.
For this pattern because you want to leave spaces between the ribbon rows
so they don't pile on top of each other,
I'm going to do four rows of single crochet.
Again I'm not skipping that first stitch
because I want to keep the count even. No matter how many single crochets you use,
make sure to periodically count the row to make sure your number of stitches is even.
----
----
This is one row of single crochets, chain one and turn.
I keep working this way
until I get back to the end.
----
----
I would do four rows, but I'm only going to do two now.
I want to show you the back stitch. When I've completed my four rows
of single crochet, I'm back now to the ribbon.
Chain one and turn.
I want to keep my ruffles all on the same side
instead of going around the panel.
So when I turn
the ribbon yarn is on the back side.
We're just going to repeat what we did before on the front,
but now it's going to be in reverse on the back.
The ruffles are going to come around the back.
This time I go through the top two loops of the single crochet first
and remember to keep the ribbon yarn flat
and go through the next ribbon loop or ladder.
Yarn over and pull through both.
Yarn over and pull through the two loops on the hook, making a single crochet.
I'll do the same thing. Go through the top two loops of the next single crochet
and through the next ribbon loop or ladder.
Holding them together, yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through making a single crochet.
I'll finish off this short row.
----
----
Go under the next single crochet and through the next ribbon loop or ladder.
Holding them together, yarn over and pull through.
Yarn over and pull through making a single crochet.
Since this would be the end of my ruffle row, I would now work four single crochet rows.
When I'm finished, I will be back on the front
so I would be making a front ruffled stitch row.
When you're finished, very gently pull down the ruffles to even the mesh.
----
You will end up with a very nice thick fabric
that has four rows of single crochet
in between these beautiful ruffles.
You can use this fabric to make whatever you like -
a scarf, a purse or maybe a ruffle decoration on the end of a garment you're making.
