AniMatti is a very intensive course organized in two main parts
in the first one we have a series of lectures
and in the second one a design workshop
For the first didactic part
this year we had the usual three workshops
Eleni Mouri held a class on animation's basic principles
as the animazionedesign laboratory
we held a class on moving image design
Chris Gavin, who came from London,
did instead a class on stop-motion animation
AniMatti 2010 title sequence
Hello, I am Eleni Mouri,
I teach at the TEl in Athens and
I came to AniMatti to give a class on classic animation
Eleni Mouri is a Professor at TEl of Athens
in the local Department of Graphic Design
over the last twenty years
Eleni started her career in animation in the eighties
at Bruno Bozzetto's Milan studio
since then she's been working mainly in commercials
At AniMatti Eleni has taught
a class on the basics of animation
through three exercises
the first was about morphing
and dealt with transforming
one figure into another
the second one was about animating a walk
The other day we started doing the walk,
which is a key principle of animating humans
I climbed on the table to show to students
how that works in reality:
how a normal walk looks,
how to do a cycle walk,
how to do an exaggerated walk
the third exercise,
about representing jumps,
helped to show other basic animation principles
In this exercise I used the idea of jump
to explain some key principles of animation
such as anticipation,
stretch and squash...
so we decided to work on a big jump.
The students were extremely good.
One of the most interesting things is
this year's AniMatti Chris Gavin's contribution.
a young London animator
that recently made himself a place in the spotlight
with 'TXT Island',
a short that had an extraordinary success.
The most inspiring thing about Chris' class
has been confirming once again
the power of stop-motion within animation
The class that Chris lead at AniMatti
was about a typographic stop-motion animation
Chris lead two main exercises:
the first was about lip since,
a classic of animation.
This is about extracting a fragment of conversation
between one or more actors
from a movie or an act,
and reinterpreting it with animated images.
the second exercise Chris assigned our students
was about translating visually
the idea of a verb
Per le riprese in stop-motion
abbiamo diviso i ragazzi in gruppi
di circa quattro o cinque componenti
alcuni gruppi hanno iniziato a collaborare
molto efficacemente,
dividendosi i compiti:
qualcun'altro leggeva il time sheet
preparato precedentemente
in maniera molto semplice e grafica
the Moving Image Design module
is based on After Effects
we asked the students to work
on very short animated sequences developing a concept
out of a letter of the alphabet
and hence to try to decline this
in a twenty seconds timespan,
building something visual
on an audio track produced by Marco Testoni and Stefano Nurra
Stefano Scotti is a graphic and motion designer
at Milan's Frame by Frame studio
The studio, which's headquarters are located in Rome
is a production and post-production company
they also do tv branding design
through many examples Stefano clarified
the creative and production process
that lay behind such products
work begins with a conceptual phase
that involves presenting the clients
different visual solutions,
after that extremely detailed storyboards
are developed in order to anticipate the final result
that goes eventually to production
and is often developed combining 3D software
such as Cinema 4D
and compositing software such After Effects
As usual in the second part of the school,
the AniMatti students have been engaged
in the design and production
of some short animated projects
One of these, 'Super Dario Bros. '
is a funny animated re-interpretation
of the famous video-game
'unrespectful nursery rhyme'
is another project,
that carries the strong impact of Chris Gavin's class
it's mainly based on
the language of stop-motion animation,
and as any nursery rhyme
deals in a light and funny way a topic,
and this time with images
'the inadequacy of the dimensional existence'
is an animated play that opposes
two different ways to do animation:
the 2d one based on drawings
and the three-dimensional one of stop-motion
'Sa Fironzana',
finally is a project that tells the story
of an old local legend
combining the Sardinian tradition
with digital technology for animation
eeeeeeeeeeeee ok
looks like everything's good
no... no
That's it, I don't know what else to say
