(Um) my name is Bill Young and I taught school at the old junior high
31 years. I had many of the students that were effected
here. Brothers and sisters (uh) I could tell you
days when it was ninety degrees we couldn't open the windows
cause the smell was so bad. I also gave tennis lessons for many years at
Whirlpool Park. I was park director at Green Springs and anytime that we would (uh)
we service our courts, I would take our kids out to Whirlpool Park
really safe place we thought, so I spent a lot of time out there along the way too.
(uh) We had our first meeting at (name) High School regarding this problem
and I felt we were getting no response, as I'm sure everyone here did,
from the state of Ohio. I decided to do something I never in a million years said I would do
and that was to become a politician and I ran for state representative in 2010,
lost in the primary by 9 to 5 votes because I was told I was a one issue candidate
and that issue was finding the answers, not only for these folks, but for everybody here.
To find out what exactly was on in Clyde, OH. I didn't mind
being called a one issue candidate because this is the issue that's important
should be important to all of us. I ran again in 2012 in the general election, every
every community I went to, every candidate forum
breakfast I talked about the Clyde cancer cluster and for us to find the answers
Just like all of these folks
never once was anything indicated
against Whirlpool to put them out of business that's just crazy
branded as being against economic development
I was on the side of people here which was really wrong
over my campaign. I'm not saying that's why we lost
but I wasn't going to back down from the support of everybody here.
like (names) and
I promised Alexa. I lost my wife, Candice, and
my wife of 35 years to cancer. She
come home and say well my back really hurts
and we went through so much Bengay that I should have bought stock in it.
Finally just went to the doctor and came back with stage four
cancer. North Coast Cancer which is now part of the Cleveland Clinic
said we have never seen a cancer
like this. We're looking all over the United States
to find a case study for the cancer that she had
when she finally
had to be put into hospice, she had 5
broken ribs from going over the railroad track
...she broke her entire arm picking up a fork.
she went through pain that no person
should ever ever have to go through. Our daughters lost their Mom at a very young age
I guess...like everybody here
to find the answers to this. That's all I want, that's all they want
to find the answers. You can't ever bring
lost loved ones back. Your heart aches for every person that's up there apart of this
this. But I know that
in my heart that these are great great people
the ones I know personally, the kids I've had as students
they didn't deserve this, my wife didn't deserve this
this. People are saying to me well there is cancer all over Ohio all over the
United States and they, we mention look at Gibsonburg and different places and by gosh
everyplace in Sandusky County I said this could be your community
don't tell me I'm a one issue candidate. This could be your community!
and I just wanna find the answers.
So thank you so much.
