Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village and we'll be looking at correcting common reading problems in children. Reading with no expression, another common problem. And it's a problem that needs to be worked on in the very beginning stages because your child will be learning to write. Writing and Reading will go together in school. So it's important as we played all the rhyme games and played the games and the expressions to be able to stop your child from having a monotone tone when they read. So, you can ask them to read as if you were the character. When Mr. Wolf says I'm going to blow your house down. How angry would you really be? If a wolf was outside and tried to blow our house down. A child may say, I'd be so angry. Can you say how angry you'd be? Can you show me? Give them an example that would relate to their world by using the story. Well can you say how angry you would be? Yes. And then they'll read it with more expression. Try to relate it but please, please for the monotone, let them see the importance of expression. Read it as if you were that character or in that situation which will help too. Does this promote expression? Yes. Does it promote fluency? Yes. Again, some of your fluency is to use, how fast, how many times can you say this in a minute? And you give them certain things to say or to go back to some of the books, the tongue twisters are excellent. Because a lot of times when people are reading monotone, it's because they haven't developed yet how to make certain sounds too. So they keep everything at the same level. So that's how you work on that common problem.
