Hi guys, I am going to talk about the time I missed one of my offers to get into university.
This was like when the fees were £3000 and it was the last year before they went up.
I applied to one of my local universities, they accepted my lower offer. I thought I
was going to get it and then on results day I missed it by about 7 marks and I was just
a blubbering wreck. I was quite embarrassed by how much I cried and I was like "just leave
me alone, leave me alone". As a result I missed out on help I guess because I just didn't
want to speak to anyone. What I really should have done was I should have spoken to my tutors,
I should have spoken to my careers advisors and I should have rung up the clearing hotlines
and said what else can I do. I did look for other art history courses which were what
I applied for that year, and you know there were only two options, one private university
I wouldn't have been able to afford, and one university in a location that I didn't want
to live in. So I just left it at that and thought I will have another go next year.
Basically what I have learnt is had I been more broad minded and done a wider search
of course that I would have been interesting and maybe rung up the clearing hotline, I
probably would have found out that the art market course at Kingston University had places
and I could have gone to university a year earlier had I just calmed down a bit and just
opened my mind up to what I could do. Because come the following September, I was like right
where do I want to go - I want to go to London, I found Kingston University, I searched its
courses and hey presto arts markets came up, and I never thought I could do that the previous
Summer. So just learn from my lesson, if you don't get in it is not the end of the world.
If you really want to go to university this year then go through clearing, something might
come up - it might be the best decision of your life, or you know, just go back and retake
your exams and go to where you really want to. I guess that is my advice! Thank you.
