My name is Ethan Seagren. I'm a senior film and new media major here at the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln. In the film major, I'm studying visual effects as one of my particular
interests. Ever since I was young I was really interested in film and starting making family
vacations into iMovies. Since then, it just kind of kept going up and up and here I am
now at UNL making films. A lot of times I do get that where I'm watching something that
just looks off and I'll say something like, "Ethan, be quiet."
I played soccer in high school and it was just a way to get exercise and I met a lot
of friends playing soccer. It's definitely a release. Once I'm out on the field I can
kind of get into the game and not have to think about all the homework I have due the
next day. I think one of the great things about film
is that it's so pervasive and it permeates through all of society. You can take such
a simple message and express it through the medium of film. Everyone can get it. Here
at UNL you really get hands on, working with professionals and getting out there in the
industry, getting used to film sets, getting used to sporting events, and working live
action. We went to New York to shoot a feature film.
Being able to work on that with our professors and a professional New York crew was absolutely
incredible. And so just being a part of that and even being in the same city was really
exciting. I don't think I have one favorite film. I
get asked that a lot of times, but there's a lot of different films for different reasons
that I really enjoy, like definitely the Pixar stuff. Just the way they're able to express
the story. For football gamedays I'm in charge of the
instant replay. I also do a little bit of directing and some editing and shooting. It's
incredible, just the atmosphere and experience of being inside Memorial Stadium with ninety
thousand people, it's an incredible feeling. As a film major with an emphasis in visual
effects, I still get the broad education of the film major. So I still learn cinematography,
lighting, composition, directing; we still learn all of that. So that's really cool because
I can still come out on set and work with the camera, work with the lights, work with
the talent, and still get the whole experience.
