My name's Dominic McDevitt.
I'm 32 years of age.
I work in Leicester City
for Leicestershire Centre for Integrated Living.
Well, I suppose my biggest encounter with barriers
has been attitudes, attitudes are far more debilitating
than a more physical impairment has been.
As a youngster I had people saying to me,
"You're setting your sights too high to go to university".
I did that. I overcame that.
I not only overcame that,
I achieved better than some of the people
who were saying that I wouldn't be able to do it.
I think that's the biggest kind of barrier,
to try and show people that I was capable of doing things.
Not just doing things, achieving them to a high standard.
Not just being as good as the next man
but very often being better than the next man.
I suppose thus far, my sort of biggest achievement
was obtaining my legal qualifications.
I got an upper second class honours degree in law
and a master of law degree with merit.
And I also, not only did I attain that level of academic standing,
I also won some awards while I was doing that as well.
I think my advice for young disabled people
when looking at what they want to do for the future,
that's got to be, stick to your goals, keep focused,
and don't let people dissuade you because of their assumption.
