Welcome to "Flea Market Flip."
I'm Lara Spencer, and today we have two teams
with a very different style,
but they have one thing in common --
They are competitive, as they hunt for treasures to transform,
here at the Stormville Airport Antique Show & Flea Market
in upstate New York.
What's up?
First up, Ron and Zach are business partners
that pride themselves on the ability
to breathe new life into old and worn-out pieces.
I could spot from a mile away
something that's 100 years old.
They're taking on
lifelong stylish friends Vanessa and Lindsey,
who have been collaborating on design pieces
since they were little girls.
We do disagree a lot.
I think this is such a great piece.
This is silly.
On a lot of things... all the time.
We're giving each team
a list of three projects we call our flip list,
along with a $500 budget
and only one hour to find their three projects.
Let's go that way.
The three projects on today's flip list are "Retro Design" --
Update a worn-out piece of furniture in an unexpected way.
Next is our "Light and Dark" project --
Transform a piece to feature contrasting color in the design.
I already have all these ideas for that.
And finally, it's "Create a Pair" --
Our teams must combine or pair up items to be sold as a set.
A couple of tips before you get out there --
Really think about looking for maker's marks.
It's gonna help you on the sell side
if you know the history, the maker.
Think about your customer, too. It's not about you here.
It's about your customers. All right. Feel good?

Okay, I'm getting nervous, and we're walking too slow.

We need to find the "Create a Pair" project.

MAN: 1955 Volkswagen bug windows.
We should probably use these for, like, a table.
What can you do on these?
Could you do $15?

This one has a lot of chips.
'Cause if we turn it into a tabletop...
I'll tell you what.

This will be our tops for the tables.
And then we need separate bases that will work together.
So let's go -- Which way should we go?
How about this for our base -- our side table?

WOMAN: They're $25 apiece or $40 for the pair.
Best I'll do is $38.
We could do $35 on these, just three bucks' difference.
Yeah, I'll do $35.
ZACH: Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
You like pieces with character?
Yeah. Always.
When you find a good piece,
it's about connecting to that piece --
something that's unique.

I think that's what makes it interesting.

Well, Great Uncle Liam that came over
and was a barber in the city.
You know, he would be horrified at what you just said.
You have to figure out a way to get back in her good graces.

So, you guys found solid pieces.
Now we have to see how you transform them
and whether or not you can flip them.
VANESSA: I'm actually really curious to see
what comes from those two guys
'cause I wouldn't picture them as being, like,
stylish flea-market flippers.
RON: The girls? Come on.
Can they hold a tool?
Do they know how to build anything?
I don't know.
Welcome back to "Flea Market Flip."
The workshop is buzzing.
Both of our teams painting, sanding, you name it.
Oh, and they are not shy.
A whole lot of nothing is what's happening here.
We'll see come sale day.
But first, we'll have to see
what kind of transformations Ron and Zach can pull off.
They plan to revamp a pair of bar stools,
create side tables
out of wooden barrels and VW car windows from 1955,
and turn an old-school barber-shop stand
into a hip minibar.
It's been a lot of sanding.
Vanessa and Lindsey are hardly slacking off.
They want to update a pair of 1950s side tables.
They'll transform two dining chairs
into one upholstered bench.
And they're attempting to modernize a classic hat rack,
otherwise known as a hall tree.
Hall tree. That's what it was.
Our retro design project, we're gonna repaint it.
What I think is tragic
is that they are covering up solid mahogany
with spray paint.
They have no respect for wood.
Do you remember the hall tree?
We have a little bit of debate.
So, what's the debate?
LINDSEY: Instead of the wood hooks that originally came on...
Ohh, you're not gonna use the originals?
We're not going to use the originals.
Mark. Dave. Come help me.
I'm into it.
I really, really -- don't you guys think?
That's part of the history right there.
MARK: Not only that these were original,
but this is a turned, threaded shaft.
They don't make 'em like this anymore, girls.
Any time you find an early 20th-century
or a late-1800s piece...
Don't take it apart.

We did it! We saved another antique!
ZACH: That's vintage.
For the barber stand, we're gonna sand it down,
restain it, put some leather on the top.
There was a leather armchair being thrown out,
and I went home, grabbed my utility knife,
cut this off the leather chair.
On the side of the street.
People were looking at me like, "What are you doing?"
I'll be a great bar.
Ooh, it smells clean.
LINDSEY: That one piece they have, the bar,
from the second they purchased it,
we're kicking ourselves for not getting it in the first place.
ZACH: Yeah.
The barber stand came out amazing, very impressive.
For the "Create A Pair" project, we got two different chairs
that we're gonna face towards each other.
We need to level out the chairs, um, and reupholster.
Technically, it's gonna be the hardest is the bench,
'cause it has to be perfect.
Mark, these chairs are different heights.
Are you gonna be able to create a bench with these?
Well, we're gonna adjust it at the seat.
The most important thing to me
is that it's functional and that it's not wobbly.
I'm confident,
and Mark is helping us make that really stable.
Yeah, you have the right guy for the job.
The "Create A Pair" project,
we're taking two pieces of glass from a 1955 Volkswagen Bug,
and we're pairing those with two half barrels
to create side tables.
Just take this middle plank off, open it up.
Then you could use some storage, maybe put a shelf here.
I do, too.
It came out way better than I envisioned.
You want to sit on my bench?
[ Laughs ]
Shall we?
Don't sit too hard!
So, this is for the "Light and Dark" project.
We were thinking about darkening the frame.
Yeah.
Maybe creating some type of a seat that could be --
like, with these goat skins.
I wonder how the real fur is going to appeal to the audience.
You think that could be an issue?
Okay.
Yeah.
'Cause people are gonna sit in it,
and you just want to make sure
that there's no excuse for a discount, you know?
They're gonna do that anyway.
This piece is beautiful. I love this piece.
That's it. I love it.
LINDSEY: We have two tables.
VANESSA: We're gonna hollow out the inside,
take the original drawer out,
and then we're gonna paint the base a lighter color.
LINDSEY: And then the legs will be dark again,
just for different elements.
So, we're gonna have dark, light, dark.
Light and dark.
Looks like you've broken a sweat.
Are you working too hard?
LINDSEY: You're only sweating 'cause you have a long sleeve on.
They think they're working harder
just 'cause they have more clothes on and they're hotter.
We're doing just fine.
I'm really excited.
I think they look as expensive as I had hoped for.
I hate the gloss on this so much.
I was thinking we distress like this.
As we were going along, it didn't make sense anymore.
VANESSA: How should we distress it?
So, we'll start just by sanding it,
and then I'll mix up a little bit of something
that you can put over that.
The hall stand was quite a progression
as we changed it a couple times.
Someone's gonna love it for the fact that it's an antique.
[ Laughs ]
Girls are lovely. They will attract buyers.
You got your clean hand dusty.
Will their pieces attract buyers?
I don't know.
SPENCER: Welcome to the Antiques Garage,
