Hi! My name is Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition.
In this segment, I'm going to talk about cholesterol and diabetes. Cholesterol is found mostly
in animal foods including some of these foods I have over here. Bacon. As you can see, there's
a lot of fat here, and that also includes cholesterol. A lot of meat, some poultry,
especially the darker poultry along with the skin of poultry. You should take that off
if you're going to consume poultry. Lard. Butter does contain cholesterol, so you want
to eat that in very moderate amounts. Eggs also. The egg yolk contains cholesterol. Not
going over the recommended number of 4 eggs a week is important, but you can consume as
many egg whites as you would like. Also, creams have cholesterol and any whole dairy products
also contain cholesterol. Some tips to decreasing cholesterol include do not add butter or lard
when cooking as you see here. Use non stick canola and olive oil cooking sprays. When
cooking, you want to bake, broil, grill, steam, or roast your meats so that you're not adding
any extra cholesterol. Limit egg yolks to 2-4 a week. Limit animal foods to portions
sizes recommended by your dietitian. Choose non-fat or 1% fat dairy products, and only
choose lean cuts of meats and poultry. Do no consume the skin from the poultry. Those
are ways that you can decrease you cholesterol, which decreases your chances of developing
heart disease along with diabetes.
