Hey YouTube, Tasoth Commander here.
Today I've got another episode of "100 Kills" for you, once again presenting an
assault rifle: The SCAR-H.
A short explanation of the series in general: "100 Kills" is a series where I pick a primary
weapon in every episode and explain how you can get the best use out of it in the early days
when you've just started playing with it, which attachments are useful, which are not so
useful, and what you can do to be successful with this weapon.
Now let's get to the SCAR-H: The SCAR-H is a Belgian weapon, produced by Fabrique
Nationale, and it fits the picture that Battlefield 4 is generally modernizing the
weapons compared to Battlefield 3. The SCAR-H was available in Battlefield 3 as well,
however, it was the short-barrel variant, classified as a carbine. So it was only
available to the engineer class in Battlefield 3.
The SCAR-H in Battlefield 4 fulfils another function: It is now classified as an assault
the G3A3 filled in Battlefield 3, being the only assault rifle that shoots 7.62mm ammo,
compared to the 5.56mm ammo of the other assault rifles, or 5.45mm for
the Russian ones, respectively.
This means that the SCAR-H has its very own damage model: While the assault rifles
chambered in intermediate calibre do a maximum damage of 25, which drops to 18 at
range, I believe, the SCAR-H does 34 damage per shot at short range, and even at the
longest ranges it does 25 damage -- as much as the rest of the assault rifles do up close.
Obviously, you only get 21 rounds per magazine in return, which equalizes the whole
thing in a way. But I can already foreclose that the SCAR-H is an extremely good weapon,
and that it is the weapon I used most up until now, and a weapon
I was very successful with.
With its very high firepower and very good accuracy, the SCAR-H obviously shines at
medium to long range. However, it is not to be scoffed at in close quarters, as its hip fire is
not bad at all and it can fell enemies very quickly at short distances as well by virtue of
its high firepower -- in spite of its low rate of fire of 620 rpm. Additionally, it has a rather
quick reload time of 1.9 seconds with a bullet still in the chamber, and 2.4 seconds if you
emptied your entire magazine. If it gets close, this helps to even out the disadvantage of
only having 20 rounds in the mag. At longer ranges, however, it also has a small
disadvantage you have to bear in mind: Its bullet velocity is only 460m/s. This is pretty
poor, and thus it is much more difficult to hit moving targets than, for example,
with an AK-12.
To succeed at long range, therefore, you need to find a target that doesn't move too much,
and fell it quickly with successive short bursts.
So now let's get to the attachments you can equip the SCAR-H with bit by bit during the
first 100 kills. This, as a matter of fact, is the first weapon I do an episode of "100 Kills" on,
which is no starting weapon and therefore is completely naked when you use it for the first
time. You don't have any attachments at all in the beginning, but have to unlock every single
one. What you get then is: The Reflex red dot sight, the laser sight, the ergo grip, the
muzzle brake, the ACOG 4x sight, the canted iron sights, the angled grip, the heavy barrel,
the M145 3.4x sight, and the flash light.
So, which of these attachments are useful, which are not? As you can see in this video, I
use the Reflex red dot sight most of the time. The high accuracy of the SCAR-H would allow
for the attachment of a 3.4x or 4x sight, which I would only suggest if you're going to
optimize the weapon for long range combat. I will come to that later.
For the accessory slot, you unlock the laser sight early on, which is always a good choice,
as it increases the accuracy when shooting from the hip and is able to blind enemies a
little. You just have to remember to turn it off when firing at longer distance, so as to not
reveal your position. This brings us to the first setup I would suggest for this weapon,
and which is somewhat a universal setup, similar to the AK-12. It is completed by the
ergo grip and the muzzle brake, both of which you unlock pretty early on. The ergo grip also
improves your hip fire accuracy, and the muzzle brake reduces recoil -- at the price of
having to deal with a little more bullet spread at range. You sacrifice a little of the
advantages this weapon otherwise has at long distances, but you gain a significant
improvement at shorter ranges, so you get a pretty good allround weapon in the end. In my
opinion, the SCAR-H is capable of handling pretty much any situation with this setup.
A short remark: For my personal liking, just as with the Ultimax, the compensator is not
suited for the SCAR-H; it has exactly the same horizontal recoil as the Ultimax, and therefore
I feel that the weapon simply isn't very useable with that. 0.2, by the way, is a very
low side-to-side recoil, which does not have too big an effect
even without the compensator.
So now for the second setup I would suggest for this weapon, which completely builds on
the strengths of the SCAR-H and makes it a weapon for longer ranges. In particular, this
means using the heavy barrel to further increase accuracy at long range, and combine
it with the angled grip, which compensates for the heavy barrel's increased recoil by
decreasing the first-shot recoil multiplier. This is especially useful since you only fire short
bursts at long range, and therefore have to deal with this first-shot multiplier all the time.
Indeed, this is the setup I used all the time from the point where I had unlocked the
heavy barrel at 80 kills. You could take it even further -- which I didn't do -- by mounting a 4x
scope and replace the laser sight with the canted iron sights, so you could
use those for shorter ranges.
There is one attachment you don't unlock during the first 100 kills, which I want to
address nonetheless: The suppressor. Depending on when you start playing with the
SCAR-H, it might be possible for you to already have unlocked one of the
Battlepack-suppressors for this weapon. I'm not quite sure, as I unlocked mine through the
SCAR-H battlepack, but I got suppressors for other weapons through "normal" Battlepacks
you just get for level-ups. This means that it should be possible to unlock a suppressor
before getting 210 kills, or the number you need to unlock
the regular suppressor (160), respectively.
Now, it's just been three days since I advised against mounting a suppressor on the
Ultimax, which has a similar rate of fire, similar accuracy and similar recoil to the
SCAR-H. So, what's the difference that makes me think the SCAR-H will perform well with a
suppressor? The decisive factor in this respect is the bullet velocity which, as I said
before, is very slow on the SCAR-H. Therefore, the decrease you get by attaching
a suppressor is much smaller. Whereas it was almost 50 per cent for the U100 Mk 5, which
really influences the way the weapon handles, how you have to aim, how much bullet drop
you have to take into consideration when shooting at longer range, the difference for
the SCAR-H is little more than 30 per cent. This makes it much easier to manage, and
thereby you can really use the advantages the suppressor gives you.
A crucial thing to mention as well, is that one of the drawbacks the suppressor had in
Battlefield 3, which was the shorter damage dropoff distance, which meant you did less
damage especially at medium range, has changed in Battlefield 4. That means that the
damage curve over distance stays the same when using a suppressor, and therefore you
just have to consider small things. In the case of the SCAR-H, this is the comparatively little
change in bullet velocity, combined with a rather small increase in bullet drop, and the
fact that you don't get the increased accuracy of the heavy barrel or the reduced recoil
of the muzzle brake.
All in all, my opinion on the SCAR-H with suppressor is, that it works excellently, and
especially on modes like Squad Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, where everything is
not as full, and where everyone is not running at a particular objective where you will always
run into enemies, but they can instead appear everywhere and you creep around the edges
of the map and look for enemies specifically, not showing up on the minimap is an
incredible advantage. And, as I said, the SCAR-H is a gun that gets along with the
suppressor especially well. So, if you're playing with the SCAR-H a little longer, you
will get the "normal" suppressor for 160 kills. Maybe you're lucky and get the Russian or the
Chinese suppressor even earlier. I can only recommend trying this combination,
especially when you are playing Squad or Team Deathmatch.
Now let's get to the result: As you surely realized by now, the SCAR-H is a weapon I
really like. This, of course, is very much personal preference; I know for a fact, that my
brother does not like to run with the SCAR-H, especially because of its low rate of fire. I
have to say that this doesn't bother me, as it does enough damage in spite of shooting
slowly because of the different damage model. It should have, by my estimate, almost
the same damage per second (if you hit with every bullet) as the AEK -- simply because it
does that much more damage per shot. So I think the rate of fire is not an actual criterion.
The side-to-side recoil is very low at 0.2, indeed it's the same in both directions,
making the gun dance a little, but as I said, all in all it's low. And the vertical recoil might be
high at 0.5, but on the other hand the SCAR-H shoots only 620 rounds per minute, which
leaves you enough time to comfortably counter that. In summary, you could say that
the SCAR-H is an exceptionally good weapon at long range, it is not to be scoffed at in
close quarters, and therefore I would say it is one of the best weapons the assault class
has at its disposal.
With a little luck, I can perhaps bring you the next episode of "100 Kills" this weekend. It
will deal with the MX4 submachine gun for the engineer class. Upcoming episodes which are
in preparation right now will deal with the Type 88 LMG and the AEK-971. I have to say
that I didn't play a lot of recon; this class still isn't my favourite, especially when it comes to
using bolt-action rifles. I think I've got around 60 kills with the CS/LR 4 by now. As soon as
I've got 100, I will present it as well.

the SCAR-H on Squad Deathmatch on Zavod 311. This is the setup I explained first; the
universal setup, so to speak, with muzzle brake, ergo grip, laser sight
and the reflex sight.
Well, enjoy, and until next time!
