[music] Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz
[pause]
and welcome to DermTV.
I’d like to remind you that as a general rule of thumb, in order to get the
full sun protection from your sunscreens rated SPF value, you need to put
your sunscreen on before any other skincare products but what about
moisturizers with sunscreens? Do they give you the same protection that
regular sunscreen products do? You bet they do. In this moisturizing lotion
which is labeled Daily Moisture Lotion, there’s an SPF of 28. There’s a
moisturizer and a sunscreen. But we know that the sunscreen has to get to
my skin first, in order for it to work. So when I put this moisturizer on,
will the sunscreen ingredient in this product beat the moisturizer in the
race to get to my skins surface first? It doesn’t matter. And the reason
that it doesn’t matter is when this sunscreen was tested, it was tested in
this form, in the form you see there. That’s with the moisturizer and the
sun protection factor all built together and tested it this way; it yielded
the SPF of 28 that’s on the container. That’s the same way it’s done for
make-up with sunscreen. They test it as is. So in the United Stated, when
products are sold with SPF values it doesn’t matter whether it’s plain
sunscreen, moisturizer with sunscreen, make-up with sunscreen, lip balm
with sunscreen, you’re going to get that rated SPF value just as you would
if it were just a plain sunscreen with the SPF value. The thing that you
need to remember is that regardless of whether or not the sunscreen is
alone or with any other product, make sure you use it everyday.
