Alright, item number 4 in our Search Practice Quiz. Another culture piece. This time, weíve
got ìA branch of the U.S. armed forces with the motto ìSemper Paratusî runs a training
facility in northern Californiaî. The question is, approximately how many people are trained
there each year? So, what weíre going to focus in on? Obviously, thereís ìSemper
Paratusî thatís probably going to be a main key item that Iím going to be searching for.
ìÖruns a training facility in northern California. Approximately how many people are trained
there each year?î So, something to consider here ñ You always
got to keep in mind that you a question might have more than one answer for a question that
you are looking for. In this case, the question that Iím going to be exploring is there only
ONE armed forces facility with the motto ìSemper Paratusî specifically in northern California?î
So, letís get started by pulling up our trusty search engine. Weíre going to type in ìsemper
paratusî. There it is, just pull it up. Right away we have a Wikipedia entry, and another
Wikipedia entry. Letís see what the Wikipedia entry is for Sempra Paratus. Here, as it pulls
up ñ ìAlways Readyî is what Sempra Paratus means. As I scroll down, there are a number
of organizations that have Semper Paratus as their logo - in Hong Kong even and Germany
and so forth. So, Iím going to need to narrow this down. If I look at the other search results
that pop up as Semper Paratus, I notice we have ìofficial Coast Guardî. The second
tells us that Semper Paratus is the model for the Coast Guard. Hereís another one with
the U.S. Coast Guard. Hereís another one with the U.S. Coast Guard. Another U.S. CG,
thatís Coast Guard. Chances are, weíre looking at Semper Paratus with Coast Guard.
If we look back in the search challenge here, weíre looking for a U.S. armed forces branch
with the motto Semper Paratus that runs a training facility in Northern California.
So, letís refine that. We come back over here and refer to ìnorthern California coast
guardî and specifically ìtraining facilityî. Letís see what pops up as we click on that.
So, right-off-the-bat weíve got ìTraining Center Petaluma. Training Center Petaluma
is a Coast Guard training facility. Coast Guard Air Station Humbolt Bay training center.î
So thatís an air station so that one doesnít count. Here is ìTraining Center Petalumaî
U.S. Coast Guard again. As I take a look at the very first result, I take a look at the
snipit and it tells me right away that approximately 4,000 students train there. I can click on
the chevron and the knowledge graph is over on the right hand side. Letís go right to
the article itself. We can see here in the very first paragraph ñ ìApproximately 4,000
students train there each year.î Youíll see there is an annotation. So when I click
on that there is an article that was retrieved that was listed in ñ it was retrieved in
2007. ìHistory of Training Center Petalumaî, so as I click on that, it brings us to ñ
well, low and behold! The actual page of the U.S. Coast Guard (.mil for military) in Petaluma
specifically. Now, if you scour this website, itís going
to be hard to actually pull up that information. This has obviously been updated in the last
year or so. It is very difficult to find, specifically, the number of 4,000 in here.
You click on ìAbout Usî, youíll get lots of information and lots of numbers. The problem
is, if you check the URL, itís no longer about the Petaluma training center, this is
the global site for the U.S. Coast Guard. So itís difficult to come up with that information
anywhere other than in the Training Center Petaluma Wikipedia website. The answer is
4,000 students. However, I would site that this information was pulled from a Wikipedia
article. Let the reader know the veracity of the information and they can judge if they
want to rely on this information or not. So thatís an approach to take in getting the
answer to number 4.
