True story.
Can we do the interview ?
So Thomas, how has been your semester in the most beautiful country in the world : Scotland ?
It was really usefull and a very nice experience.
We discover an other world, other people, an other way of life.
Itís a bit different but eventually iím glad to be back in France because itís still my home. But it goes well.
Do you miss it ? Not so muchÖ
And for going there, do you got any problems ?
No, finally a little. We took the plane, myself and 5 other people.
RYANAIR is so cheap that we got the feeling to travel in a lego airplane with oil fries in it.
It can works !
It make you feel that you gonna crash.
Itís a plane where behind the portholes we can see water. A plane pityfull.
No trouble in the landing ?
When we land everybody applause. Maybe they wonders the pilot canít usually do it ?
Happy to be alive.
After the little plane accident. Arrived in Scotland, first impressions ?
You feel a little bit lost. There are no more signal written in french.
You are happy to find your wallet. Itís already a good point.
You donít know where you gonna (are going to) sleep, where you are going to work. You donít know anything.
When you arrived itís the aventure. You are there with nothing more than your backpack. Itís like Koh Lanta.
We lost some on road, they didnít have the totem.
Colletaral damages, itís acceptable.
So about the housing, you can easily find something ?
First before the journey, we seek informations.
We got reservations to sleep in a youth hostel. So everybody will sleep in this hostel.
It was really spartiate but nice.
We ate in a place downtown, we traveled around the city .
I made my first mistake. I forgot my laptop computer in a KFC.
I went looking for it two hours after.
I think itís happened to everyone, so you donít have to be ashamed .
I went two hours after. I ended to find it. I was relieved.
At the KFC, did they kept it ?
Yes, I had a life-time luck.
And at the Youth Hostel, everything gone well. A day the firemen went at the front of the hostel.
It was the fire alarm.
To be outside a 30th of january wearing only a tee-shirt.
The weather is fine in Scotland.
It ës cold. In tee-shirt, I wasnít making the smart guy.
At the begining it was a bit cheap, but we found a flat. We made corents between French.
You spend there your last semester in an university ?
Yes. The University of West Scotland.
The University of the West Scotland.
So there I had only english-speaking classes.
It was a bit hard at the beginning. When the teachers in the classe speaks a very deformed english. Scottish-English.
It can be in French when you speak with your teeth like that, soi t wasnít easy to understand.
I understood nothing in the amphi.
The classes wasnít too hard ?
No, it wasnít a big level soi t was ok.
Level 2 or 3 classes wich mean bac+2 or bac+3 . What we did in France.
But the graduation was a bit different, it was in percentages, in ´ mark ª. In contrary to France with the mark on 20. After we got a grade B,C,D,E,F.
It goes well ?
Yes, It was fine.
And the student life there ?
It was really nice, much better than France.
There, it really moves. They had a big party.
There was a nightclub in the University called ´ líUnion ª.
On the campus ?
Nextdoor. They made party every Friday night.
And they was often theme-based party, costumed.
The ´ Smurf ª Party for example where everyone was painted in blue.
The people were really in the mood, thatís why i twas really nice.
People came to have fun. In France the party are too soft. Smurf party, commando party. The Hit Phone party i twas a party which I had a lot of fun.
Everybody had a big headphone in the head and there was 2 DJ on their disks...
...they mixed different music. On your headphone there was 2 buttons which you can use to switch between the two music.
You couldnít hear the people around. So everybody were in the dancefloor, with the headphone,
and people were doing different dances because they didnít had the same music.
Oh yeah ? They really played different music ? Oh yeah.
On one hand rock music and on the other hand rap music for example. The mixture was really fun.
Itís a good idea.
Sometimes you watched the people.
Because they were on the blue satation and you on the green one. It was really nice.
And about your internship course, you found it easily ? Well payed ?
I wanted to find a internship course on a communication agency in Glasgow.
So I went to Glasgow. I went to every big agency in Glasgow, giving my resume.
It wasnít really efficient. I made a plan with google map, I wrote all my agency and I made my turn around the downtown area to give my resume.
At the end for 35 offer, I gave 22 piece of paper because half of the society didnít exist anymore.
I got, on the count of 35 society 6 answers,
5 totally negatives and one other who said ´ We already got one ª. So negative.
So I was without training course.
Same as the 5 other man with me.
Without training course, we didnít know what to do. We didnít want to go back home, because we got 6 month of rent to pay.
Because we didnít got any choice, It was a bit harsh.
Finally I did a freelance training course for a pub.
I had to make the website for the pub.
It went well except that the pub closed 3 weeks before the end of the project.
You go down the street, you pass in front of the pub and you see large wooden board on the wall.
So, you got paid ?
I wasnít supposed to be paid. Itís a bit sad because the website will be wasted.
And outside the training course, the studes, the party with weird headphone, it was good ?
What Iíve done interstering ?
Iíve made some visit there. For example in Edimburgh it was nice.
We wanted to rest a afternoon in a park but unfortunately the parks are all closed.
You have to live in the neighborhood to be able to acces the park.
A private park ? Itís silly because i twas shinny but we couldnít acces.
We spend an hours around the city to find a park to rest.
It's weird. Itís weird the closed park.
After that,we wen to see the ´ Highland Games ª.
Scottish culture.
Itís strong scottish who makes strenght contest. Itís famous.
Scottish wearing kilt and carrying big stones, tossing rocks, or weights in length.
Also the most impressive, the trunk tossing.
They carrying the trunk, they toss it and he have to do a 360. It was really awesome.
There were bagpipe band. It was really interresting and pleasant to listen.
Do you tried the bagpipe ?
Itís impossible. You have to push a bag full of air and blow at the same time. Itís really hard.
I tried, it do nothing. It want leave a single sound.
Do you have any advise to give me if I want to go abroad ?
Go abroard ? Why not ? Itís seem nice.
I want to put headphones.
Honestly, theonly advise I can tell itís to have fun and spend a good time there.
Profit. Itís really different. You can do what you want there. Have fun and learn an other way of life. You must have something to tell.
And for the kilt, itís true that belowÖ ?
