Hi guys! So in today's blog I have set myself a challenge for you guys - to cook a student
meal for two people using under five pounds!
So that's two pounds fifty per person. And we're going to use all the ingredients from
Kingston market, and we'll use like Sainbury's basic range, and then I'll show you how to
cook it in a bit.
It's usually a lot cheaper if you come to the market as opposed to going to Sainsbury's
for your fruit and veg, because you can get, instead of buying packets of stuff you can
buy like, individual things. So lets see how cheap we can get like mushrooms for.
Hey look at that! I think this will do, you reckon?
So, that was 60p. That's pretty good. Pretty good so far.
So I've just got back from the market and I've got mushrooms which were like 60p, which
is pretty good. Then I went to Sainsbury's and I got basic like, spaghetti, basic bacon,
some single cream, and I already had like some eggs and some cheese so I'll show you
those ingredients in a minute.
Oh yeah! And the thing we're going to be cooking today is a simple carbonara and it is a recipe
that another student from Kingston gave me.
He's Italian so hopefully it should be sort of authentic; although I'm using Cheddar cheese
rather than like, a hard cheese like Parmesan or whatever because that wasn't really in
my budget.
So yeah, let's start cooking!
I've got some mushrooms there, some streaky bacon, spaghetti, single cream, a couple of
eggs. We're just going to be using the egg yolks. A little bit of cheese and some garlic.
You don't have to use garlic, but I quite like it. It gives it a bit of flavour.
Um another thing with garlic, I really advise, I got this for Christmas actually, but I really
advise investing in one of these. It's just a garlic crusher. It saves your fingers smelling
loads and its saves a load of time peeling and chopping it up.
You just put that straight into the garlic crusher. I can actually probably get all three
of these in there at once. And once I come to put the mushrooms in I just crush the garlic
straight in with the mushrooms.
Separate the yolks from the whites. This is probably like the trickiest bit and I'm not
very good at it. I can just about do it okay so I'll just show you how I do that quickly
Whilst that is still cooking I can just quickly grate a bit of cheese and then we're pretty
much done.
So whilst we're just waiting for that last bit of pasta to cook you can just get on with
some of the dishes, and then no time is wasted.
What I quite like to do is I leave a little cup of extra starchy water in case you want
it a little bit more fluid when you finish it off.
Drain the pasta off, and into here.
That's what it looks like and it's really, really easy. It takes literally, it took me
about fifteen minutes and it's under five pounds because I only used two of the eggs.
I used about an eighth of the cheese and I just used all the basic range at Sainsbury's.
You'll be absolutely fine! I hope you enjoyed watching and keep an eye out for my next blog.
