Hello! Today, I'm off on my annual summer vacation! I'm going to avoid the summer crowds
and heat!
Welcome to another edition of Maude's Two-Minute Meddlings -- a series of tips for seniors
and the people who love them.
Today, we're talking about travel tips. As I mentioned, if you're retired and can travel
whenever you want, consider going during the off-peak times to save you money. In April,
May, and September and October, most places still have nice weather, but not the summer
crowds.
And here's a few more nuggets:
• If you're planning a trip overseas, find out exactly if and how your medical insurance
works outside of the country. (Medicare is not valid outside the US except in very limited
circumstances.)
• If you wear eyeglasses, carry an extra pair. I can't see past my own nose without
mine and you want to be able to see everything on your trip -- and getting a new pair of
glasses away from home can be a real hassle.
• If you take medication, take a full supply with you, and pack it in your carry-on bag.
You don't want to be in a position to find an out-of-town pharmacy to fill a prescription.
• Make sure to book an aisle seat on any flights so you can easily walk around and
stretch your legs.
• Finally, just showing your gray hair or passport can snag you a discount at many sights
and attractions. Always ask about senior discounts, even if you don't see posted information about
one — you may be surprised.
So, I'm off! But I'll be back next week in time for another installment of my Two-Minute
Meddlings!
Bon Voyage!
