The IGB Fellows Program
The Institute for Genomic Biology offers postdoctoral fellowships for promising young scientists.
Will you be part of our thriving research community?
Join our outstanding faculty: Carl Woese, Nigel Goldenfeld, Steve Long, Gene Robinson
And current fellows:
Jaebum Kim, Cellular Decision Making in Cancer Chris Thibodeaux, Cellular Decision Making
in Cancer Christopher Fields, Genomics of Neural and
Behavorial Plasticity Sarath Janga, Mining Microbial Genomes
James Doroghazi, Mining Microbial Genomes Nathan Gabrielson, Regenerative Biology and
Tissue Engineering Juntao Gao, Cellular Decision Making in Cancer
James Davis, Biocomplexity Suleyman Yildirim, Host-Microbe Systems
Dr. Andrew Leakey joined the IGB in 2005 as the first IGB fellow.
Andrew Leakey, Ph.D., Assistant Professor Plant Biology, Genomic Ecology of Global Change:
"One other really nice feature of IGB and I think something which distinguishes it as
a genomic institute from a lot of the other institutes like this that are cropping up
around the country and other parts of the world is that it does have the biomedical
component within it, but there is a real focus on the use of genomics in ecological and evolutionary
context which I think give it a character that a lot of other equivalent institutes
don't possess."
The Institute for Genomic Biology has more than 150 faculty members from 30 departments
across the University of Illinois.
As a fellow you will: build connections between research themes, collaborate with leading
scientists, other postdocs, & students, develop new skills and grow as a professional.
Dr. Nicholas Chia became an IGB fellow in 2008.
Nicholas Chia, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow, Biocomplexity Research Theme: "Yes, you definitely
want to apply to come here. You know the general rules apply, you always think about the researcher
right? You always think about the researcher you are going to join with, for me it was
Nigel and Carl, and that's just duh you know. If you're going to work with Bill Metcalf,
any of the other - you should always go by the researchers you are going to work with
and I think IGB stands up pretty well there."
The IGB is located in the heart of the Illinois campus. The U of I has a rich history...and
a vibrant future. Champaign-Urbana is a classic midwestern college town, with museums, galleries,
art, farmer's market, Big 10 sports, diverse international population, festivals, great
public transportation, and it's a family-friendly place, too.
Plus, if you crave big-city excitement, you're only 2-3 hours from Chicago, St. Louis, or
Indianapolis.
Nicholas Chia: "I like the neigborhood, I like the town, I like Urbana, I like the parks,
Urbana does a very nice job with the parks, and the free library; all of these things.
Very good for kids, school is very nice for the kids, all of these things."
Andrew Leakey: "I think it's a great community to live in. It's not a big city, but it has
a lot of things you need for day to day life. And, it's very close to big cities if you
want that. When I first came here I used to go to Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis
quite a bit of the time. Now, I have a young family and it's a fantastic place to bring
up a family. I think it can work at all those different stages of life."
