Hello I'm John Robbins, an assistant chief constable in West Yorkshire Police
we want West Yorkshire Police to be a safe place to be
where everyone trusts the police to do a good job. it's my job to make sure the
people of different ages
from different groups and backgrounds are treated in a fair way
for the Police to do a good job it's important we talk to lots of people so
we can understand how we can make things better
and make people feel save. We've already been doing lots a good work
but we have a lot more to do. I want to tell you
about what we've already been doing and I want to tell you about what we'll be doing next
so what we already been doing in West Yorkshire?
well we've been doing a lot to work with different people and community groups
to make sure we're treating everyone in a fair way
we've also be working with group such as deaf community
on improving how we work with them and with transgender people
to make sure they know what hate crime is and to help them report it.
We've also signed up to "mencaps" stand by me
police promise, where we've promised to help people with learning disabilities
We've also been training our officers and staff to know
the best way to help people no matter who they are
or where they come from but we always want to do more
to make sure we treat people fairly all the time
to get even better we need a plan this plan is
called "an equality action plan" and it tells people
what we're going to do next. So what are we planning to do next?
a few things are to help people know
more about hate crime and how they can report it
to work with black and Asian people to find out how can give a better police service to them.
to work with young people to make sure they're safe
and can trust the Police, and we also want to work with other organisations
to protect children and adults
to support those have been hurt. we must ask young people
how to do a better job when we have to stop and search someone
and we also intend to ask people who work for us
what stops them applying for new jobs, if they're disabled?
women? gay or lesbian? or from a different race? when we finish this work
we will talk to lots of people to see if things are getting better
we also then work with people from different community groups
to help us do a better job. There is more information
and also an easy read of all of our report on our website
we are absolutely committed to making you safe
and making you feel safer. Thank you for listening.
