Hello and welcome to ennTV. I’m Melody Meade from IT Communication. How many of you feel
sluggish and tired around 2pm? I thought so. Want to know why? Want to know how to lose
that feeling? In our first story Jack Groppel, Vice President Performance Training at Wellness
and Prevention Inc shares some energizing new insights exclusively for ennTV.
You know, it's interesting some of the most recent research shows that even if you have
a high level of fitness, exercise every day, really, really fit, if you sit for long periods
of time like people normally do business the brain starts shutting down.
During a three-month study, Johnson and Johnson’s Wellness and Prevention business researched
the impact of small and frequent movements on their employees throughout the day.
And we looked at people after they moved at 30 minute intervals throughout each day. And
we asked them about energy levels, engagement, focus. Everything went up.
In fact, most of the people in the study said they had increased their level of activity
at work, their level of energy at work and 37 percent said that the energy increase continued
when they got home after work.
I feel just more energized here at the office. I-- I feel very lucky, actually every single
day, to come here to know that I can actually just move and get in that physical activity
during the day.
At Wellness & Prevention we believe that this is the new way to do business. So this work
environment, we wanna be the role model not only with-- within our own people but for
all of J&J and for the world. Remember this, just stay in motion.
OK, I’m starting today. Time to move. Wellness and Prevention actually began the Organization
in Motion program with a small pilot study at the athletic shoe and apparel company New
Balance. The original pilot was so successful that the company decided to expand it to more
of their employees this year. And recently ennTV visited their headquarters
in Massachusetts to learn more about their experience.
Movement has always been part of the New Balance culture, the essence of the New Balance brand
is about trying to get consumers to move faster, more frequently and further.
Three times a week, New Balance employees can join this hour-long boot camp as part
of their normal work day.
I've seen some work habits change. There's at least three or four people in my movement
group who now stand up at work. Some have replaced chairs with movement balls it is
what I've noticed the most. My M.O. was to send funny emails. And then, people would
always stop and talk to me in the hallway like I did ten push-ups at my desk, I did
some squats, I stretched. It was cool.
One reason Tim was picked to be a movement champion -- over the past year, he dropped
almost one hundred pounds.
And to me, I felt like a hypocrite because I was-- I was fat, and how can I encourage
other people to move if I don't move myself.
Nice going Tim. I’m sure you are motivating many folks at New Balance, as you are at Johnson
and Johnson…you’re motivating me too. Now, here’s Chris Jordan from the Human
Performance Institute with a little movement motivation reminder just for you.
Sitting for long periods is not good for your health or energy. It impairs blood circulation
and decreases metabolism, often making you feel fatigued at the end of a very long day.
However, moving, anything, can often improve your blood circulation, boost your metabolism
and make you feel energized. Simple things you can do any time, any place, anywhere.
Like this. Stretching, reach out in front of you, hold it, breathe normally. Give yourself
about 15 seconds, you get a great way of improving blood circulation. Or, roll your shoulders,
roll them back and forwards for about 15 seconds. This will improve blood circulation as well.
Finally, maybe a knee to chest stretch, alternate knees for about 15 seconds just fine. But
you know what, one of the best things you can do is – stand up and go for a walk.
See you next time.
Thanks for those great tips Chris.
