Hi I’m Candace, and I’m Jacqueline. Welcome to Aisle by Aisel
[Jaqueline] We are taking a trip to the grocery store
to share a few tips we’ve learned about making healthier food and drink choices.
[Candace] In this segment, we are going to talk about
canned fruits and vegetables.

[Jaqueline] Here we are in “can land.” I used to think
that everything here must be unhealthy. Now I know that if you choose carefully,
a lot of the stuff on this aisle is actually pretty healthy - and quick!
[Candace] True! I love canned fruit but I used to just
grab all my favorites – like peaches and mandarin oranges – without ever checking
the label. Whoa did they have a lot of added sugar!
[Candace] When buying canned fruit, get fruit packed
in water. If you can’t find that, get fruit packed in juice and drain the juice.
“Just say no” to fruit packed in syrup – even “light syrup” is loaded with
sugar, which means extra calories.
[Jacqueline] I don’t typically buy canned fruits, but
I do frequently buy some canned vegetables. I worry about getting too much sodium.
I heard that most people eat too much sodium, and as an African American I have to be especially
careful.
[Jaqueline] So, I buy low-sodium or no-salt-added canned
vegetables. The nutrition facts label allows me to quickly compare the amount of sodium
in each one, and I get the one with the lowest amount. If I do buy regular canned vegetables
I just drain and rinse them well.
[Jacqueline] I always buy canned beans – they are one
of the foods we should eat more of. Buy low-sodium if you can, and drain and rinse regular beans
well! They are great on salads or in soups.
[Candace] Also with canned beans, watch out for sauces.
I try to stay away from the beans with bacon or sauce added and just get plain.
That way, I can season them to my liking without any added sugar, salt or fat.
[Candace] So in the canned fruit and vegetable aisle
you have to read the front and back labels to get canned fruits that are lower in sugar
and canned vegetables that will not break the
sodium bank.
[Candace] We hope this trip through the grocery store
has been informative for you.
[Jaqueline] it was for us!
