The life live it cd rom and the kit that goes with it
is a really diverse collection of resources for first aid
teachers can use it without any training. The reason that we liked it was that
it included lots of useful background information for teachers
it includes very detailed lesson plans, it includes interactive whiteboard activities
video clips, sound clips, it has quizzes
The thing that I liked most about using this kit, to be perfectly honest
is that it's easy to use. There is nothing that the teacher has to contribute
to this apart from being in the classroom and working with the students
because we learnt that the most important person is you.
together with this resource. For that reason alone I think
it's one of the best resources I have ever used.
Keep hold of my arm, ok? keep hold of my arm
and it sort of mixes education with fun really
because kids don't want to just go through sheets of paper and read
they want to do practical things which is what the life live it kit is about
The first question said imagine you see someone lying on the opposite
side of the road. It looks like they have been knocked off their bike
and they are in pain. Who is the most important person?
The students reacted bizarrely well I think actually, I always think they will
be sort of bored by first aid but actually they got in some quite heated debates
as to what the right thing to do was. They really engaged with it.
You know when you get electrocuted your muscles spasm
No I mean generally, why would he have his hand round the lamp?
There was a list of people and how they were injured
and we had to say who would be the most important person to help first
But that has wasted five minutes! you can bleed to death in like 60 seconds
It came up with the answers afterwards and it was interesting to think about it
because we learnt that the most important person is you
What I find necessary about everybody knowing some first aid
it is not only about knowing what to do and what not to do it is giving them skills
on decision-making which is really really important
We were in a car crash and all I could do really was pull my sister out
but I think if I was in that situation again I could do a lot more to help out.
One of my friends had too much to drink and I had to put them into the
recovery position and that helped them because
they were throwing up quite a lot and it just meant they didn't harm themselves
by choking on their own vomit
Well I think that's what teachers need to take on board, the fact that the
messages the first aid course are trying to give are basic
they are not trying to create paramedics or medical experts
they are just trying to give humanitarian information of how to help people
when you arrive on a scene What are the least important?
Crying! Crying, ok because if someone is crying
they are breathing The lesson plans, the PowerPoint
presentations, the first aid kit, the dummies, the bandages
everything was there and for a teacher all you have to do is just look through it
there is even an award to give to students when they have completed
the resource. Saving a life now would make me feel
really good about myself it just gives you that positive feeling that you
have helped someone. It would make you feel so much better
about yourself to know that you have done something good for someone else.
