Hi, my name is Laura. I'm from youngwritersworkshops.com and I'm going to talk about how to learn to
spell. Learning to spell is very interesting, as the English language can be pretty inconsistent.
But, there are some specific things you can do to help kids learn to spell. One of them
is practice words. Give them a small number of words that they're going to learn, appropriate
to their age range and their level. And then have them practice them. Using them in context
helps, so the more you can help them to use words that they're really focusing on in a
story. Using that as part of your writer's workshop, students can correct their own spelling.
That way they're learning to use the words in context and not just pure memorization.
You could also teach spelling rules and that can really help students to be able to know
to spell words that not on their list, but in the future. So, when they're learning to
spell they can learn the rules that govern how things are spelled and put those into
practice. There's always going to be words that aren't, don't follow rules and those
are good words to review separately as special cases that they'll need to be learned on their
own. And then going forward, reading and making lists of unfamiliar words can also help students
being to learn and gathering new words that they haven't been exposed to before. Keeping
a word journal. All these are ways that they can really reinforce their spelling and begin
to be good strong spellers.
