Lap-Band, or gastric band surgery is a sugary where we implant a silicone device around
the top portion of your stomach.
There is a balloon that sits on the top part of your stomach, which is connected to a tubing.
The tubing is then connected to a port that's sutured or sewed to your muscle underneath
your skin.
The gastric band is adjustable, so what happens is approximately one month after surgery,
you'll see your surgeon, and he or she will tighten your band. They'll use a needle to
access the port, and then they'll inject saline into the port, which will travel through the
tubing, and inflate the balloon that's around your stomach. By doing this, you'll be able
to eat less, and you'll feel full faster. The food sits in the top part of the stomach
longer, and then slowly filters through the area where the band is constricting.
Weight loss after gastric band surgery is approximately one to two pounds per week,
or patients can expect to lose about 50 percent of their excess body weight in about two years.
So if you have 100 pounds to lose, after the gastric band, on average, the person will
lose about 50 pounds after about a year and a half to two years.
Behavior modification is very important after any weight loss surgery, so you want to make
sure you're making proper food choices, and also incorporating exercise into your life.
So those are some facts about the Lap-Band, or gastric band surgery.
