I started the Arizona Institute for Breast Health in the late 1990s and here is what
inspired me to start that program.
I frequently get asked what inspired me to start the Arizona Institute for Breast Health
and at the time, we were really focused on making sure patients had enough information
so that they could make best treatment decisions for them. Back in 1993 when we started the
program, we were seeing more women interested in breast preservation, lumpectomy and radiation
compared to mastectomy and they needed information to help them make that decision. So the focus
of the institute is really on educating women and their families about breast cancer and
the options that are best for them. We do it in a way that is interdisciplinary, so
we have surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, reconstructive surgeons, patient
advocates, all sitting at a table talking about a woman who has been newly diagnosed
and then forming her options and then one of us will go in and speak to the woman and
her family and discuss what that means and trying to do it in a way that makes sense
to a lay person and in that way, women have been empowered to make their treatment decisions
and move on with their lives.
Hi, I am Dr. Jay Harness and I want to share with you important information that I believe
that every newly diagnosed patient with breast cancer needs to know.
