Harvey, are you still in the valley? In Woodland Hills?
Granada Hills? Harvey Levin: No, but we're in Northridge Linda,
at Cal State Northridge, where there is an extemely volatile situation
This is the Science Building, Science Building #2 there is a toxic fire inside
I'm being told that one of the chemicals is Lithium Bromide,
the HAZMAT Team is on the scene... and another fire, another building
in fact, Marco, if you can you pan to the right
is also on fire. That is also a Science Building, where you can see some of the
plumes of smoke from it. But the firefighters
for the last 20-30 minutes, we've been here about 20 minutes
I would guess, they were not able to get inside
but finally venturing in but very cautiously
because they don't know exactly what is involved in there
they know that some chemical waste in involved
we know that the building inside is on fire, they're not able to go in
for a while and that made things worse
So it's a very volatile situation here, two Science Buildings has
hazardous waste inside, firefighters are having trouble getting
in, much less containing it,
Anchor: Harvey?
Harvey: Yes?
Anchor: We see some firefighters working in the building
We don't see their faces covered, they're not warning you, that there is a danger
inhaling any of the fumes right now.
Harvey: They told us, uh, 5 minutes ago that there was, and the we should get no closer
than we are right now. Although I can smell it, and it smells wretched.
Uh... so... I can't tell you what's going on there
Just the last report I got from a firefighter official here 5 minutes ago
that this was indeed a toxic fire and as I said, HAZMAT is here.
Anchor: Harvey, thank you very much. We should point out that we are being
joined by the network periodically throughout our broadcast today.
And, oh, we're gonna go to the President right now
