Idea or concept to reality and implementation. That's what a social entrepreneur does.
[WHAT IS SOCIAL ENTERPRISE?]
You're really looking at what's often referred to as the triple bottom line. So
people, planet and profit. It's a very rewarding career. It's a very difficult career as
well.
I often think of social innovation as been societies RD Department. A place where we
can explore what we want to create together. and so social innovators and social Entrepreneurs
are the drivers of that system, the ones who Find the improvements that are required. Because
improvements are always required.
I think social enterprise is the new way of doing business. In my perfect future, I see
all businesses acting in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
I want to bring together my values of caring, compassionate, healthy sustainable societies
with the power of the market, to be able to kraft new strategies, so that we all can be
partof the solution.
as you're working, you are providing some small means of helping to change the world
when people knock at your door and want to implement this in their own community, how
could you not help them?
[WHAT INITIATIVES ARE ONTARIO SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS EXPLORING?]
it is remarkably satisfying to think that you have some small impact in terms of building
affordable housing units, right? That you can move money towards changing our circumstances
around climate change; that we can provide financing and support to a sustainable food
venture that might provide healthier high-quality food for kids.
One teacher, Mary Jane Morrow(?), took a very average class with an incredibly wide difference
between the top and the bottom, kids as low as the 9th percentile, Within a year, her
kids were in the 98th percentile with the lowest in the 95th, and then a year later
they all signed up for the Pythagoras Math Competition and 14 of the 17 got awards of
distinction.
We are single parents and I need a way of earning a living that would allow me to look
after my child. So Tiffinday has a ripple bottom line mission to1. To make Money2. We
want to do something for the environment3. We want to do social hiring so mother can
take care of their kids
Delicious.
[HOW IS ONTARIO NURTURING THE GROWTH OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISE?]
we continue to have challenges in our local communities, in our province, that require
the next generation to tackle then, I think social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise
is really one of the key solutions to that
we have a unique opportunity to position this province on the global stage.
my experience over—lived in Ontario all my life, and I believe Ontario and citizens
and—and the government have a receptivity to innovation.
And for Ontario to be the centre of innovation, we need to focus social innovation just as
much as we need to focus on technology innovation, medical innovations and financial innovations.
There is an incredible buzz and attitude about Social Entrepreneurship in this country and
it's incredible that I have the resources close by.
In Ontario, you have a chance to reach the politicians and really contribute to shaping
policy. there's a lot of support from the government for its entrepreneurs. Like, they
want to see the province change. They want to see it stay competitive. And I think that's
the sort of desire that Ontario needs if it wants to be a world leader, stay a world leader.
[WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THE NEXT GENERATION OF SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS?]
unless you are a great businessman and that's your passion, your greatest strengths is probably
your idea
those who can find the big ideas, develop them and make them work, will move ahead the
fastest.
it is okay and it is a great thing to be idealistic. That is what is going to allow you to succeed
and maintain your enthusiasm as you grow and develop.
First I would say good choice. Second I would say, there is a lot resilience and perseverance
required.
do your research. So make sure you know what the market opportunity is, what your finances
are, who other potential collaborators are within your particular universe.
I think all of us need to fill each other gas tanks, kind of through a collect energy
radical, creative, out of the box thinkers who have an unrelenting passion for the change
they want to see in the world.
[FINAL THOUGHTS...]
You learn to appreciate that it is more than money that drives you. That people are generally
good and want to help and I think that is a very important lesson to learn. The world
is generally a good place and people do want to help each other, they just have to have
the right things to drive them to help.
Ten years from now being a SE will be replaced by mothers and fathers who want my kid to
be a doctor, I want them to be lawyer, I want them to be an Accountant, No, I want them
to be Social Entrepreneur. What I hope will end up happening.
We can do it. You know, we can do it. And we are doing it. And it's hard.. it's super hard.
But it's the most deeply fulfilling
experience to be able to live your values
and make social change at the same time.
