Yesterday, she saw the big bad world for the first time.
This is the baby gorilla, delivered by a rare emergency Caesarean.
Her mother, 18-year-old Imani, went into labour at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. But after
time passed and she wasn't any closer to giving birth, she was transported to their veterinary
hospital for an emergency C-section. Weighing just over four pounds, this little one was
cut out by a team of medics. Nadine Lamberski is from the Safari Park.
In retrospect, the C-section was the right decision. We think that the health of the
foetus would have been compromised if we delayed the surgery any longer. She's extremely strong.
She can grasp. She kicks. She's vocal, has a very strong sulcal reflex. She looks around.
She can hold her own head up, which is pretty amazing.
So the baby's doing well, but she is in intensive care receiving oxygen. Her mum too is recovering
from the operation.
She's Imani's first baby. Let's hope it's not such an ordeal if she has another one.
Time for one more close-up before we go.
