Hey guys, VVinrar here, and welcome back to another edition of Winning by the Numbers.
I am using a different microphone today so hopefully the audio problems from the last
video are gone. The topic of today's video is Nashor's Tooth
compared to Guinsoo's Rageblade, by the numbers. So to start off, let's look at the stats of
both of these items. They are both very similar in the type of stats given. Both give a pretty
healthy chunk of attack speed and ability power. The difference lies in that Guinsoo's
Rageblade gives a nice amount of attack damage, and gives you additional side stats once you
fall below half health, while Nashor's Tooth will give you a static amount of cooldown
reduction. So now let's compare the two items directly.
Nashor's Tooth is more powerful in sheer ability power, at 65 AP versus 40 AP, but when the
holder of Guinsoo's Rageblade is below 50% health and has 8 stacks, the stats are much
more comparable at 65 AP vs 72, and 50% attack speed versus 52%. After this point, the stats
differ, as the primary choice you make when you buy these items is whether you need cooldown
reduction or attack damage. Nashor's Tooth gives 20% cooldown reduction, while Rageblade
gives you 30 attack damage and some other bonus stats when at low health. The cost difference
is within 100 gold, so the comparison can be easily made between the two items.
Looking at gold value and item efficiency, Nashor's Tooth has a total gold value of 3,531
gold with a cost of 2500 gold, giving it an efficiency of +1,031. As for Rageblade, it
has a total gold value of 4,909 gold while its item cost is 2600 gold, giving it a gold
efficiency of +2309. Note that if you take away the bonus from Guinsoo's unique passive,
the gold efficiency for both items is almost the same. We can conclude that both of these
items are cost efficient, and both are very good item purchases to make in the early to
mid game, although Guinsoo's Rageblade is more powerful from a pure statistical perspective.
Please note that I measure gold efficiency with cost per point of the cheapest base item
for each stat. This system is different than the system used on.
the League of Legends wiki, as the people on their staff who wrote the gold efficiency
on each item seem to have no idea how the system works and overrate the gold value of
pretty much every item in the game. Now, you might ask, when you should buy Rageblade
over Nashor's Tooth, or vice versa. Guinsoo's is a good pick on hybrid champions, those
which deal sources of mixed damage, such as Jax. Meanwhile, Nashor's is better for AP
carries which may need some source of attack speed, such as Diana or Teemo. But say you
play a champion that can make effective use from both of these items, such as a Kayle
played as a standard AP carry. One or both of these items are core on for
most Kayle players, so you'll probably buy them as rush items. With flat AP quints and
attack speed runes, as well as a standard offensive mastery setup, a level 9 Kayle will
expect to have 32 AP and 19.3% bonus attack speed. We will also assume that there is 4%
base cooldown reduction and resistances are ignored.
Kayle does less physical damage per second with autoattacks with Nashor's tooth, but
if you add the effect of her Righteous Fury skill, her autoattack mixed damage dps output
increases to 214.1 damage per second, which is much more than that provided by Guinsoo's
Rageblade and only is outstripped when she is below fifty percent health. Throw in damage
from Q and Nashor's is always stronger than Guinsoo's Rageblade.
As you can see, when the damage per second is averaged out, it's basically the same between
Nashor's Tooth and Guinsoo's Rageblade with all of its stats before accounting for resistances;
however, these values are assuming optimal use of skills and that her E is always up,
and stacks don't change. If we add cooldowns, the situation is different.
When Kayle's E isn't always up, accounting for initial burst damage, and starting from
0 stacks, there's a dramatic damage difference. In this graph, the seconds elapsed is on the
X axis and Kayle's raw damage output is on the Y axis. Kayle with only Nashor's Tooth
will do 7,819 raw damage before resistances, while with Guinsoo's Rageblade she will only
do 6,374 damage. Note that the damage output between the two items is very similar at first;
Kayle will have her E skill up more often with Nashor's Tooth than with Guinsoo's Rageblade,
and the damage difference comes from the loss of on-hit damage when Righteous Fury is down,
resulting in a 1500 damage difference over those 30 seconds.
Even if you activate the unique passive on Rageblade for the entire fight, damage output
only increases 500 damage to 6,813 damage, which means that Nashor's Tooth is definitively
better for sustained DPS output than Guinsoo's Rageblade. There should be no question on
which item you should be rushing on Kayle for DPS, especially as the two items have
similar price points. However, keep in mind the Guinsoo's Rageblade does give you lifesteal
and spellvamp when you are below 50% health as defensive stats, and this could justify
purchasing over Nashor's Tooth. So for a quick overview in case you guys were
jumping around, Nashor's Tooth is more gold efficient than Guinsoo's Rageblade, except
for at 8 stacks when the unique passive is in effect. When rushed on AP Kayle, the initial
dps is almost identical, but over a longer period of time Nashor's does more damage than
