My name's Nathan Mansell and I'm a Software Developer at The Treasury. The culture surprised
me, being a government agency, you know I was expecting to be everybody in a straight
line, but it's really relaxed and everybody's -- especially when I first joined -- everybody
was really welcoming and I found that good being a graduate you know, I'd never been
in the industry before. When you start at The Treasury you have a welcoming ceremony,
a powhiri, you get welcomed in. You get to meet the kaumatua of The Treasury. You get
to meet Gabs who's the Chief Executive of The Treasury. The powhiri group sing for you
and you feel welcomed in the organisation as opposed to just starting at the organisation.
At the moment we're working on a system which manages collective agreements. My manager
at The Treasury, he trusted me to take the lead on that project. And that's an awesome
feeling you know at such an early stage of my career, for someone to have faith in you,
to take over such an important project to The Treasury. Was nerve-wracking to be honest
at the start but I feel like I've done a pretty good job with it. And the feedback we've had
is really positive, so it's been a really fulfilling exercise for me. I'm a sports fanatic
so there are a lot of opportunities at the Treasury to get into sports teams. We just
walk up the hill and we get a game of touch together and they encourage it. Even now I'm
still meeting people, playing touch with people I've never met before and you know just making
that friendship and the connection with people so when you do work with them it's a lot easier
- you've already kind of had that initial icebreaker. Treasury offer a lot of courses
and the one I'm doing at the moment is the Te Reo Maori course. I've always wanted to
learn Maori, it's a goal of mine and since taking this course with The Treasury my knowledge
of Te Reo has gone 2 or 3 times more than it was before the start of the course. It's
a really awesome thing that they offer people at The Treasury. When I got the opportunity
to move here I was really excited. I knew nobody when I first moved here. I just moved
here for the job and found a place on Trade Me and met a whole bunch of cool people. A
lot of cool bars and cool restaurants and it's just a really cool place. I really enjoy
living here. You learn a lot. You get to live in Wellington which is awesome, you know it's
a cool culture, it's a cool vibe and an awesome place to live. It would be easy for me to
try and encourage someone to be here.
