I'm Keri Glassman, registered dietitian. You can eat out and still eat right. To make sure your restaurant meal isn't a nutrition
nightmare.
Skip the bread basket but don't skip the appetizers but do fill up on salad first.
You'll likely eat 10% fewer calories overall. And that dressing on the side? Here's a
trick... don't pour... dip! Dip your fork into the dressing first before each bite of
greens. You'll end up eating a lot less dressing without even noticing a dip in taste.
Make sure you choose dishes that are prepared in a healthy way. Look for key words like
"steamed, broiled, or baked" NOT "al-fredo, sautéed, fried, or breaded".
Don't skip dessert, just share it. Order one or two tempting selections and lots of
spoons so the entire table can have a bite or two. Top it off with some herb tea or a
little coffee, and you'll feel like you really treated yourself.
Don't forget that alcoholic drinks (especially those cocktails with the fancy umbrellas and
lots of added sugar) can really pack on the pounds. Try seltzer with a twist as a tasty
(and hydrating) alternative.
Eating out is part of enjoying life with friends and family. So skip the extra calories, fat,
and other ingredients you wouldn't want to cook with at home while still enjoying
a restaurant meal.
