Hi everyone, this is Dr. Shawn Talbott
Chief science officer for Monavie, and welcome to another edition of "From the Lab"
Today, I want to talk to you a little bit more about antioxidants
because we've already done a few episodes of "From the Lab" about
antioxidants and we're getting a lot of questions about people asking for more detail
and how antioxidants work with other nutrients in the body. So,
if you'll recall, we've already done a "From the Lab" show about
antioxidants in terms of how to measure them with the VIEW scanner and the technology
behind that device. We've also done one; the last episode of "From the Lab"
where we talked about antioxidant balance. And I tried to give
the perspective that too few antioxidants in your diet is bad for you
but too many, when they're unbalanced and they're given
at maga-dose levels can also be bad in certain ways. And what we're really striving
for is antioxidant balance. So when you hear
me talk about antioxidants, that's what I mean. antioxidant balance and
in a very specific way, they would refer to the antioxidant network.
and what this means is that, there are really five main classes
of antioxidants that we want to have in our diets and in our bodies.
We want to have representatives from each one of those main 5 classes so
those five classes are: the vitamin C family, the vitamin E family,
because there are different types of these kinds of esential
nutrients. Thiols, which is another class in it of itself,
but we don't give those in MonaVie products. Instead, the thiols
are the sulphur-containing antioxidant enzymes that our bodies
make on their on, so what our products can do is encourage your body
to make more of those thiols. These are compounds such as
glutathione, antioxidant enzymes like
super. Things that your body produces on its own and dodges
internal antioxidants that protect us from the free radicals
in the environment. So we enable your body to manufacture more
of those naturally, because we're giving you flavinoids in general
and acai specifically that we have really good research on,
to show that those flavinoids in acai will stimulate your bodies production
of its own antioxidants. So, that's three so far. Vitamin C
family, Vitamin E family, thiols, and then where the MonaVie
products really shine is the phytonutrients that we refer to
as flavinoids and carotenoids. And so you want to get representatives of
and when you do that, you get an overall better
effect, an optimal antioxidant protection in your body. And you get that
because these different classes of antioxidants fight against
different types of free radicals, whether they come from air pollution,
or cigarette smoke or our poor diets, or whatever the case may be,
there are different types of free radicals, and those different kinds of free radicals
go into different parts of your body. So some of them might
concentrate inside our cells and we need an antioxidant to fight
inside our cells. Some of them might do their damage in the bloodstream, or
in our cell membranes or different places within our overall
system. And we want antioxidants that fight against all those kinds of free radicals
in all those different places where they might get into trouble and cause this damage.
and lead to poor health. So, get the antioxidant network! If you're getting MonaVie
product, you know you're already getting that antioxidant network built
into the product so you don't even have to think about it.
Now, people have been asking me a lot of questions since the last episode of "From the Lab"
About how antioxidants can help our other
product lineups. So the juices stand on their on as a
amazing, comprehensive, very effective antioxidants. But I
said in that last show, one of the things that's interesting about MonaVie products,
is that they work in tandem, they work with each other, they work on a
comprehensive or synergistic fashion, so the juices can help
the RVL shakes. The RVL shakes can help the energy products,
the stress product can help in some of those other ways as well.
People want to know how that happens. So lets talk about each one of those areas.
antioxidants has its own piece. How can that piece help the other pieces?
Let's talk about blood sugar for a minute. Now, these antioxidants won't automatically
lower your blood sugar. But what we do know is that if you're having issues
with your blood sugar, if your blood sugar is fluctuating excessively, that
can set off an oxidation reaction. It can create free radicals
in your body which will cause damage and cause a depletion
and a drain on your body's antioxidants stores. So we can use the RVL shake
to help modulate our blood sugar levels. So in stead of getting these sharp
spikes and sharp drops, we get a nice sort of rolling
hills if you will, when you look at blood sugar control on a graph
we also know from some fairly recent studies that having more antioxidants
in your diet is associated with better blood sugar control in general
antioxidants we know, that help muscle cells take
up sugar from the blood, thus lowering and controlling your blood sugar levels
natural way. We also know from some very recent studies that
a measurement called "Total antioxidant capacity" is associated
with weight loss. So people who have a higher total antioxidant
capacity from their diets, in their bodies, have an easier time
losing weird, metabolizing fat. So you can get a perspective here
for how one side of the biochemistry affects the other side
and really go hand in hand and help each other to accomplish its
own goal even better and more effectively. Lets talk about energy
and metabolism for a second So you're not going to get an energy boost
from consuming an antioxidant. You will feel more energized
because of the reparative nature of antioxidants. Your body will be better able to
repair itself and rejuvenate itself so you'll feel better because of that.
But one thing is really important about antioxidants and
energy metabolism in general, is where that energy comes from.
There are these little cells, these little organelles inside of
cells, so they're even small than cells that create all the energy in our body
they're called mitochondria. You've probably heard of them before, you've certainly learned about them in
high school biology or high school physiology. What they do is
they convert our food; carbohydrates, fats and proteins
into energy that our cells can use to move our muscles, to send
a nervous system signal, or to do anything that happens in our body
we need ATP, we need energy from those mitochondria
The process of creating that energy though, creates
free radicals. And when your mitochondria are damaged by these free radicals,
they become very inefficient in their ability to generate energy
energy they're generating causes free radicals that damage them
and impair their ability to efficiently generate more
energy. That's one place that we really need antioxidants
to protect those mitochondria from the damaging effects of those
free radicals. And if we do that, and we keep our mitochondria sound,
in shape and efficient, they'll be able to produce energy when we need it.
And we'll benefit from that in terms of sustained energy. Physical
energy, muscular energy, mental energy, neural energy
we will feel that all of that over time as our cells are staying healthier.
Now the 3rd piece of the puzzle, or the 4th piece if we're counting
antioxidants as the 1st, blood sugar as the 2nd, energy metabolism
as the 3rd, the 4th is stress control; stress hormone metabolism.
and we know from a wide range of studies, that every single
time our bodies set off a stress response, we create more
free radicals. We cause oxidated damage in the body. So think about
all the sources of stress in our lives. Whether it's stress from
our jobs, whether it's stress from worrying about finances and bills,
whether it's stress about traffic jams, work deadlines or whatever the case may \
be, every time you're activating that stress response, you're setting
off an oxidation reaction. So if you're under a lot of stress, you have a lot
of oxidation; a lot of free radicals in your body that are depleting
your body antioxidants stores. People who are under stress need
more antioxidants to help protect them from the damage that stress has
caused them in the body. We know that the primary stress hormone;
cortisol is very catabolic meaning it breaks down tissue
throughout the entire body. So when you're under stress, your body
produces cortisol, that cortisol breaks down muscle tissue
brain tissue, and skin tissue and every single tissue in the body
that needs to be filled back up. That restorative process
requires a good dose of antioxidants
in order to regenerate and repair and build that tissue back up again
So think about if you're under stress. Think about if you're
diet has your blood sugar levels fluctuating, think about
if any time you're creating energy in your body, you're damaging
your mitochondria and all of those areas are places that
antioxidants can help. So when we say MonaVie is all about
