The joint surgeons here at UVA are focused on doing joint replacement.
They've become an expert in their particular field, they're conducting research on
joint replacement or other orthopedic issues
and that too i think optimizes outcomes. Having a surgeon who's very focused
on a particular
aspect of orthopedic surgery I think is important.
as implant technology has evolved and as our surgical techniques evolved allows us
to tackle a lot of difficult problems that we weren't able deal with just a few years ago
particularly with warn out joint replacements new engineering advances
allowed us to rebuild joints that previously were not salvageable.
Probably the most rewarding aspect of my job is seeing a patient
who is in a lot of pain can't sleep
has difficulty walking performing tasks of daily living comeback and six weeks
after the operation or three months after the operation and they're
pain-free
back to full function. That's very rewarding
I've developed relationships with my patients and I get to see them
frequently and see how well they do. When patients are looking at joint replacement
I think it's important for them to realize that there are options and at
the end of the day it's the patient's decision about whether or not that
option is right for them.
We have a monthly seminar here at UVA were one of the joint replacement
surgeons
gives a talk about joint replacement what to expect
What are the questions that should be asked head of time
what that's going to mean for them
long-term in terms of their life.
It's a great opportunity for patients to come and meet the surgeons at UVA
who are doing joint replacement,
ask their questions
and really have an informal discussion that will allow them to make the best
decision for them.
