Oh, hello, I'm Marie, a first year studying Biological Sciences here at the University
of Birmingham. I live off campus so I get the train in every day, alarm clock permitting
and the station is smack *** in the middle of campus. Just about made it to my first
lecture. This one's at 9am but sometimes I get a lie-in. I'm all about the genetics.
Hi, my name's Poppy, I'm a second year student studying Medical Biochemistry. I'm just on
my way to the library to pick up some books and to run a PASS session. PASS stands for
Peer Assisted Study Session. In these sessions, second years help to mentor first years with
their academic work.
I've found these PASS sessions really helpful. If ever you've got a problem with your work
there's these academic gurus called PASS leaders who can help you out. They've all been there
before.
Afterwards we go to lunch. It's a great way to relax with friends and have some food.
There are loads of places to eat on campus but personally I like Go Central the best.
My lab today is about Redox. These labs are really helpful to consolidate everything that
we've learnt in our lectures.
Enzymes today. Very hands on, learning vital techniques like handling equipment. I don't
think science has ever looked so good.
Hi guys, how was your lab?
It was great thanks. Listen, we've got to go to the library in a minute but we were
thinking, we're going to a pub quiz later, do you want to come?
Sounds great.
Ah, great.
There are many societies to get involved with at the Guild. As an example, the Bioscoc pub
quiz, it's all open to all budding biology extraordinaires. Whether you're an Olympic
hopeful or a party animal, Bioscoc run socials and events throughout term. There's a world
of opportunity to meet new friends and it's also nice to relax after a long day.
