Nadja Swarovski: The initial thought behind Crystal Palace was to really
reinvent the concept of the chandelier, and modernize it.
Seven years into the project, we've had the opportunity to
work with 64 different designers, and created 64 amazing
designs. The Crystal Palace concept has really emerged in
the year 2002, when we launched our first collection,
featuring pieces by Tord Boontje, with the Blossom
Chandelier. Swarovski has had such a wonderful opportunity
to work with such creative people to implement the
Swarovski chandelier components in a incredibly creative
way.
Elisabeth Diller: Crystal is a very exquisite material. We wanted to
juxtapose it.
Jaime Hayon: The units were made with a special textile, especially
elaborated by Swarovski. They are pieces that want to
become sort of an attraction. They are beautiful without
having light, or having light as well.
Erwan Bouroullec: Crystal doesn't really have a soft face. It has more
a kind of deepness. As soon as you look inside the crystal
itself, you're already thrown into a kind of illusion.
Yves Behar: The idea behind the chandelier is that you can dream any shape,
and you can make that shape. The owner of the chandelier
can make any shape they want, by controlling electronically, the chandelier itself.
Fredrikson Stallard: The inspiration behind it was really thinking about
crystal formations in geology, such as the formation of
amethysts in geodes.
Front: We are able to merge crystal with a hot liquid crystal.
Zaha Hadid: I always wanted to piece across a space, so a very long piece.
There were many ideas, but this idea of crossing a space,
and then we tried art with a twist, where's it a cone, and
how it stretches.
Ron Arad: That's the first piece I did for Swarovski, yeah. It's one of
my favorite pieces.
Studio Job: Our inspiration was the world. Cover the world in crystals.
Arik Levy: [inaudible 03:56] has been the wonderful journey into a
complete new world, where the transition of the diamond
into a wife frame, into technology, into object, into
sculpture, into space, has been a major investigation on my
part.
David Rockwell: I felt the quality of the crystal was amazing. The vision
for this particular piece was to almost make it magic.
Nadja Swarovski: I certainly love to think or love to feel that we're
contributing something to their entire design process. And
we love to think that by them including Swarovski crystal,
it allows the designers to reach the height of their
creativity.
