>>Ben: So my name's Ben Cowan, I'm from the HCI centre at the University of Birmingham
in Computer Science and I came here to talk about persuasive technologies and some of
the criticisms I have about persuasive technologies and what they mean in society and how people
use those technologies. My summary argument is basically we need to identify the behaviours
that we're trying to influence and trying to have mechanisms for the interventions we
develop with this technology to lead to prolonged behaviour change. We need to understand those
motivations and that behaviour before we can really identify that and HCI are having a
bit of an issue with that at the moment and here at Birmingham we're trying to solve that,
specifically at looking at habitual behaviours within the home and looking at how we can
change those habitual behaviours. I found the cafe to be absolutely fantastic, it was
absolutely brilliant! It was really nice not to have PowerPoint to do the talks and it
was very very good to be able to communicate to an audience that I wouldn't necessarily
communicate too at conferences and such and it was just a really sort of friendly atmosphere
and I would recommend anybody to come and do a Cafe Scientifique talk here, it was absolutely
fantastic. Lynsey>> Thank you Ben!
