Hey, Kennyart here.
I'm here at alder dune campground.
There's two lakes here.
One is called Alder and one is called Dune.
So I thought I would go for a little walk.
The lake is really
quite high compared to what it is in the summer time.
uh... the picnic tables around here are flooded!
No one is going to be picnicking at that picnic table!
This one looks a little iffy too.
It's not a real large lake but,
it's a nice lake.
I'm not really sure what this trail is like. I haven't actually walked on this one before.
So it appears that we are here.
Well, that goes down a steep hill.
but also, there's this trail off to the left
I'm going to take this one off to the left first.
Check that out.
I think that might be an interesting walk.
Always cool to explore new places.
Even though I have lived in this area
thirty some years.
Haven't seen it all yet!
There's some kids off in the distance.
Got to love the sunshine at this time of the year.
"Are you a stranger?" Oh, not really!
Ha!
It sounds like you guys are having a lot of fun.
Where does that trail go? "Don't know.."
Hi! "You can hear us coming up!" Oh yeah.
It's not a problem, you guys are having a good time. That's good.
That was fun.
That was a family of people having a great time out here.
Hello! Does this go to the beach? "Yes, and the sunshine".
And the sunshine.
"It's a really long walk to the beach, but you can hear the breakers."
Oh, ok.
Um... you can hear the breakers off in the distance.
Just barely.
Huh, there's some Monterey pine trees here.
They're actually native to California.
And they have these really tight pine cones
that uh...
only open up
in the heat of a fire.
That's how these
trees propagate themselves.
Drop all these cones and then
a fire goes through here, and they will sprout
new tress!
Here's a little low growing bush that grows out here in the sand quite a bit.
It's call Kinick Kinick.
That's an indian name.
Not sure if it's useful for anything but it's a pretty plant. Has a bright red berry.
My limited
information about the vegetation out here!
I don't really know that much.
Looks like somebody marked the trail. We went that way!
And actually, there are
regular markers along the trail too, put out by the US forest service.
These post's with the blue band on top.
Especially,
when going out on the open sand, at least, so you know where to go.
Some water right here, and there's a big lump of pitch.
This comes off the pine trees out here
Makes good fire starter.
Except, I don't want to carry that one out with me today. I already have some at home.
There's this kind of moss that grows out here.
I used to have a
HO model railroad
set up a long time ago.
I always thought this stuff would make good bushes.
It's kind of,
like that sphagnum moss stuff you can buy
at the hobby store dyed green. I suppose you could dry it and dye it green just like that.
It looks just like a bush. Pretty cool for a model railroad.
But,
I never did it!
I don't have the model railroad anymore either.
Looks like the trail here has turned into a creek!
Well, these sand dune
areas out here in the winter time can
get pretty wet.
I don't want to get my shoes wet though.
Well, we just came from the alder dunes,
not sure what C G stands for.
Campground? Yeah, campground. Alder dunes campground one-half mile.
And then off to the left Sutton
campground one-half mile.
And beach,one and one-half miles.
I think I will go towards the beach.
Head this way.
It's a pretty forest out here.
Huh, looks like we might be coming to some open sand here.
I know where I am!
I have a geocache
that's right near here.
It's called "number one hundred".
It was my one hundredth hide.
I think I'll go check it out. I don't get out here too often. Let's go see how it's doing.
All I have to do is remember
which tree it's in and I don't have my GPS with me!
I'm not seeing it. I think it's in the first tree, but I'll try this other one over here.
It's a mystery cache.
You have to figure out the coordinates on the web page.
It's gotta be that other one over there.
I thought it was actually
tied in the tree.
I don't see anything tied in the tree.
I must be blind, it's right here. You definitely can't miss that!
I'm going to look inside and see if it is dry.
Take a look at the log.
The log is nice and dry.
And it says.....
The last person to find it was
march twenty six, twenty twelve.
Popop!
That's awhile ago.
Yeah, people don't get out here to often.
Plus, it is a mystery cache, so they have to figure it out first.
Although, it's not that hard!
Well I think
I'm going to head back
towards the parking lot because
I know where I am. I'm on the trail
I have walked uh... the part I just walk before.
Only came as far as where the geocache is in the past.
I know where it comes out at and I don't really want to walk
all the way up there.
So, I'm going to head on back.
I want to show you this tree over here first though.
I always thought this was pretty cool!
This treee here,
obviously
the uh,
wind has changed the sand dune the tree was growing in.
I believe it was a lot higher right here at one time, and this root
definitely changed into this huge trunk, and so
it's like a two trunk-ed tree that joins
back to itself
five feet off the ground, it's pretty cool.
Back down the trail.
I hope you have enjoyed watching my video.
If so, leave a comment.
Thanks for watching. See ya around!
