[Stephanie] Hi, I’m Stephanie from OneCall and this is Power Surge Protection Line Conditioner
101. If you own a home theater system then you most certainly should also have Power
Surge Protection device with line conditioning as part of your system. It’s very common
to go out and purchase what’s referred to as a power strip; this is an example of a
power strip. They are very small, they’re convenient to use, take a single outlet, turn
it into multiple outlets, they will provide a limited amount of protection usually they
use Metal Oxide Varistors to absorb some of the surge. The problem is they are not very
effective. What I recommend you do is you take this, take your garbage, throw it away.
Electronic equipment in the United States is made to run on 120 volts, unfortunately
power is not consistent. There’s constantly spikes which are one to two nanoseconds, and
surges that are three seconds or more that come down the power lines. What happens is
your equipment eventually starts to wear out much faster. There’s a lot of noise in your
home, now I’m not talking about the kids running around the house or the dogs barking.
What I’m talking about is noise that’s cause from other electronic devices that are
used in your household. Common ones are the microwave, the vacuum cleaner, wireless router,
home automation system; even the equipment in your home theater system itself can add
noise to both your sound and your picture. That’s why it’s important to buy a power
surge protector that has line conditioning in it as well. There are different stages
or level of line conditioning. The most basic, just add some filters to reduce some of the
noise that’s added into your home theater system. As you move up levels or stages you
will increase the number of filters as the quality of filters. You will also add what
is called isolated banks, that is either one or more outlets that is completely isolated
from the other outlets in the system. So to protect your equipment from spikes, surges,
catastrophic lightning strikes, it’s important to invest in a good power surge protector.
