My name is Ashley Larson and i'm a lecturer here
at the Broadcast Electronic Communication Arts department at San Francisco State.
I studied as a student here in the BECA departments Masters
degree program in the Fall of 2009 and I graduated in 2011
and became a lecturer in the Fall semester of 2011 that same year.
Being a student in the BECA department is amazing.
You have a really good mix between being in the classroom, learning theory,
you're able to get your hands on cameras and switchers and audio boards
and instead of just sitting around in the classroom and learning about it
you're actually being able to take that knowledge and
then apply it and do it in class.
I think the BECA department has a lot to offer to students
that they can't get at some of the other schools.
students are really able to be as creative as they can.
You can do courses where you're given an assignment
and you can take that and transform it into a creative idea
that you've been thinking about for years.
and the faculty here is really great about letting your creativity bloom
The department really prepares you for each individual career path
that people may be choosing.
They're taking you from start to finish showing you
all of the elements that you're going to need to be successful in that job.
I'd say the best advice for incoming students is get involved,
get to know your fellow classmates because
in the courses in this department you're gonna be working very closely with them.
Everyone here is really tight and like a family but
types of assignments that a lot of the classes offer here are
you know, group productions. You're all working together.
It really fosters a great environment for all of the students
to be part of a team.
